MA Senate Bill 254 Needs Your Support!
Dear Start School Later Massachusetts Supporter,
As the legislative season comes to a close, I'm writing to ask you to please take a moment to send an email and/or call your state legislators and urge them to ask the Joint Committee on Education to favorably report out Senator Creem's school start time bill S. 254.
Senator Cynthia Creem’s bill [https://malegislature.gov/Bills/189/Senate/S254] calls for a state-wide task force to review the scientific literature and make recommendations regarding school start times and ways to help schools implement them. At least one member of Start School Later would participate on this task force.
A sample letter is provided below to make this as easy as possible. You can find your legislators’ contact information here:https://malegislature.gov/
Thank you for taking a stand on this important issue.

P.S. I invite you to start or join a local Start School Later chapter here, and please continue to share our petition on Facebook and other social media.
SAMPLE LETTER (feel free to personalize with your own words)
Dear Representative/Senator __________________ (your Legislator’s name)
As your constituent in ___________(city/town) and a supporter of Start School Later Massachusetts, I urge you to contact your colleagues on the Joint Committee on Education and ask them to favorably report out Senator Cynthia Creem's School Start Time Bill S. 254.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that teens start school no earlier than 8:30 AM. Teens in schools that meet this standard have decreased rates of car accidents, substance abuse, obesity, depression, and anxiety – and better academic performance.
Many Massachusetts towns are struggling to find ways to promote the health, safety, and educational opportunities that later start times would provide as detailed in the AAP and CDC’s recommendations. These towns, our students, and the state could benefit from the type of guidance such a task force could provide.
Please do what’s right for our children. It is time for Massachusetts to address this important issue statewide. Please support Senator Creem's call for legislation to review the matter.
Thank you for your consideration.
