Start School Later
Vol 3 Issue 1
January 2014

Thank You for #GivingTuesday
Many thanks to everyone who participated in our first formalized online giving campaign!  Your generous donations during #GivingTuesday, a national day of giving back created as part of the holiday season, is much appreciated and will help support the many projects planned for 2014.

Full Speed Ahead!
January has started off with two new pieces of statewide legislation regarding school start times.  In Virginia, Delegate Kaye Kory (District 38) introduced HB 34 specifying that the daily calendar of schools are set so that no instruction starts before 8:00am.  In Maryland, Senator Ed Reilley introduced SB 14 Task Force for Later School Start Times, a reworking of a similar bill that was passed unanimously as a House Bill last year.

Seattle at a Crossroads
The Seattle Public School Board is voting this month on whether to prioritize later school start times or to stop studying the issue altogether. To keep school start times on the radar, Start School Later Seattle urges supporters to write to School Board members ASAP to urge a yes vote on making assessment of changing start times a priority and voice support for later start times for secondary school for the fall of 2014. Friends, family, and coworkers are also urged add their voices to ensure that all the progress so far isn’t stopped in its tracks.

SSL Arlington, TX in Panel Discussion

Anne Arundel County MD Survey
In response to our local petition and widespread public concern about a 7:17 a.m. start time, the Anne Arundel County, MD school system is asking for feedback on a proposed +13 minute start time change for all grades. While this cost-free "fix" is hardly ideal and not yet up for a vote, feedback from local residents supporting later start times, even if incremental, is critical. The survey is online through 5 p.m. on Wednesday, January 29, 2014If you are a resident of Anne Arundel County, you can respond to the survey here.
