Virginia is Loving #StartSchooLater
With the recent Fairfax School Board decision to approve new proposals to start high schools later, other Virginia school districts are jumping on the bandwagon.  While Fairfax has been working with our longtime partner, SLEEP, the Manassas school board quickly authorized a change to start high schools 50 minutes later. Charlottesville followed suit, proposing a new schedule than ensures that no grade level starts before 8 am. This proposal was unanimously approved, 7-0.

As more school boards, legislators, health agencies and communities become more aware of the critical need to address student sleep needs, we'll start seeing more communities treat healthy school hours as a non-negotiable item. Since 2011, Start School Later has been a clearinghouse of information on sleep and school hours, and we continue to raise awareness and advocate on the national, statewide and local level to ensure that all students can get to school at a time that is healthy, safe and equitable.

The 41 State Salute
To date, we've found school districts in 41 states that have found ways to implement later, healthier school start times. We have partnered with other agencies and organizations to make sure that the issue of unhealthy school start times is on the radar.

We are thrilled to welcome our newest partners, Project Sleep, The Sleep Ambassador, My Daddy Snores, the Ohio Adolescent Health Partnership, and the California Adolescent Health Collaborative.
