News and Events for the Lovettsville Area

Mayor's Message

We hope you’re having a SUPER week and don’t get BOWLed over with excitement when reading this week’s updates!

First, A Thank You
As first reported a few weeks back, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors graciously and unanimously approved the installation of two post mounted speed display signs along Berlin Pike in the vicinity of Quarter Branch Road (to the north) and the Lovettsville Game Protective Association (to the south)! Improved traffic and pedestrian safety have been a focus of current and past Councils to address higher speeds within the Town’s corporate limits.

With the support from the Board of Supervisors and the great collaboration between the County’s Department of Transportation and Capital Infrastructure and our Town staff, this is an important first in a series of steps to mitigate this issue, with planned additional efforts with our state representatives and working with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to reduce the posted speed within town, especially closer to the Town Square commercial area.

We thank and extend our appreciation to the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, Loudoun County Transportation and Capital Infrastructure team, and our town staff, including but not limited to, our Project Manager, Charlie Mumaw, and Town Manager, Jason Cournoyer.

If One Budget Wasn’t Enough...
While the Town is in the thick of its annual budget review, we also want to share the upcoming February 15th (5PM) presentation by Loudoun County Administrator, Tim Hemstreet, to present his proposed budget to the Board of Supervisors. The budget will be available online right after that presentation.

As mentioned last week, highlights of the Town Manager’s proposed budgets can be found in his presentation, along with the detailed budget document, available on the Town website (here).

The remaining high-level schedule for this year’s budget is as follows:

  • February 9th: Budget Work Session #2 (CIP)

  • February 23rd: Budget Public Hearing & Work Session #3 (General Fund)

  • March 9th: Budget Work Session #4 (Events Fund, Tax Rate & Fee Schedule)

  • March 23rd: Public Hearing, Budget & Tax Rate Adoption

Encouraging State Grant Funding News!
The Town has received word from the Northern Virginia District that TWO of Lovettsville’s transportation projects have been recommended for Fiscal Year 2026 SMART Scale. The Town’s projects and recommended funding includes nearly $6.4 million in funding for South Loudoun Street and South Locust Street Improvements project and $2.6 million in funding for the South Berlin Pike and West Broad Way Intersection and Pedestrian Improvements project. Both projects are included in the Town’s Capital Improvement Plan and the recommended SMART Scale funding would fully fund these projects. These are potentially milestone grant awards for the Town, and is also another successful example of partnering with Loudoun County to apply for funding that otherwise the Town would not be eligible. The award of the SMART Scale funding by the Commonwealth Transportation Board is anticipated for this upcoming summer. If awarded, the funding would be available July 1, 2025.

Two Creams, Three Sugars... #cwac is Back!
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office is excited to return to Back Street Brew Coffee & Tea House on Thursday, February 23rd from 8:30AM – 10:30AM for Coffee with a Cop. Come out and meet Lovettsville’s newest Community Resource Officer, Deputy Southward, along with his colleagues who serve and protect our Town every day. We look forward to seeing you there!

“I am persuaded they will do great Execution”: The Maryland and Virginia Rifle Companies of 1775

“On Sunday, February 19, for the launching of Lovettsville Historical Society’s 2023 Lecture Series, we will hear the story of one of the most important events at the beginning of the Revolutionary War:  the creation of the frontier Rifle Companies and the Continental Army.

On June 14, 1775, the Continental Congress authorized the formation of several independent companies of riflemen to reinforce the New Englanders then besieging British-occupied Boston. Among the first to answer the call were four companies of men – two from western Maryland, and two from Virginia – who made a remarkable journey to reach Washington’s army that has gone down in legend as the Bee Line March.

Upon their arrival they made an immediate impact, turning a New England army into truly Continental Army, and further cementing the legend of the American marksman in history.

Our speaker Travis Shaw is the Director of Education for the Virginia Piedmont Heritage Area, where he has worked since 2017. Prior to joining VPHA he spent time at Historic St. Mary’s City, The Maryland Archaeological Conservation Lab, Mount Vernon, and Oatlands Historic House and Gardens. He holds a BA in history from St. Mary’s College of Maryland, and an MA in history with a concentration in public history from American University.

Travis is former Vice President of the Loudoun Preservation Society and served on the Loudoun County Historic Cemeteries Commission. He is currently a member of the Loudoun County Heritage Commission. He is a guest contributor to the Emerging Revolutionary War series and has written a number of articles for the American Battlefield Trust.

The presentation will be held at St. James United Church of Christ, at 10 East Broad Way, in Lovettsville. The program will be followed, as is customary, by questions and discussion.

Admission is free, but donations and are welcome to defray expenses of the program and to support the activities of the Lovettsville Historical Society.
