Union Pacific Temporarily Suspends Rail Service from West Coast to Chicago
July 20, 2021
Dear Valued Customer,
Union Pacific Railroad has announced that it is temporarily suspending rail service from the U.S. West Coast to Chicago, a Global IV gateway. The suspension affects containers from the California ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach, Oakland, and Tacoma, Washington.
A spokesperson for Union Pacific stated that the company believes that this decision will allow it to focus on clearing the significant backlog at the Chicago hub and free up rail assets “to support import loading needs on the West Coast.”
While the suspension is expected to last at least one week and cause significant congestion at the West Coast ports, Union Pacific believes that the move is necessary for the “health of the supply chain.”
