Message from the Principal

Dear Emerson Community,
I hope everyone is getting a chance to meet with your child’s teacher this week.  Parent-teacher conferences are a great way to check-in, create a plan for your student’s success and learn more about the curriculum and expectations.  We appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedule to come to the school and meet with the teachers. Emerson teachers are very knowledgeable and dedicated to your child’s success.  Please consider them a valuable resource, ready to partner with you.  If you were unable to make conferences, we will send the report cards home with the students.
It’s hard to believe we are already in November! We have switched the clocks to daylight savings and moved into the second grading period of the school year.  Please note that there is no school on Monday, November 11, giving us a chance to honor our Veterans. Also, Monday, November 25 through Friday, November 29 are non-school days due to Thanksgiving Holiday.  Please continue to reinforce the “Emerson Way” at home, including the 5 B’s.  During the November 1st all-school assembly I reminded students what it means to Be An Ally.  When we partner with each other to stand up to injustices we build a stronger community for everyone. You can partner with the school by talking with your students about what it means to be an Ally.
We hope you can join us on Friday, November 15 for the “Emerson Movie Night” fundraiser hosted by the Dad’s Club.  Students will watch The Lion King in the multi-purpose room from 6pm- 8:30pm.  Admission is $15 per child; however, no child is turned away for inability to pay.  If you bring a pre-K child, please plan to stay and watch the movie with them.  Students are encouraged to bring a sleeping bag and come in their pajamas. It will be great fun!  For more information contact: or Thank you to our Emerson Dads!
We are planning to donate the Lost and Found items this week.  If you haven’t taken a look, to reclaim your child’s sweatshirts, coats, etc. please do so as soon as possible.  We will take the clothes to a local Goodwill donation center at the end of this week.
Finally, a special shout out to Mr. Engel for donating enough paper plates to keep the student’s food from home microwaved all year.  Another big Shout Out to Ms. Nina Goldman and Ms. Elif Lostuvali for coordinating the Kindergarten/School Tours.  If you have signed up to host a tour during November, December or January we are grateful.  It takes a village, and we have a strong one.
Jana Holmes, Principal

Calling All Emerson Scholars: Strut Your Smarts!

This week the hallway outside the cafetorium debuted a new take on Emerson’s ever-popular Math Wall: now an infinite puzzle palace! You’ll still see lots of math challenges on there, but now it’ll feed your neurons way more than just numbers. All Emerson scholars grades K to 5: come by to stretch your mind and show us what you’ve got. Keep your pencils and your eyes sharp, because the wall will be both infinite and random: new challenges will pop up when you least expect ‘em.

Would you like your children to be trained in safety procedures as they walk to and from school and around town (observing traffic lights, looking for oncoming cars, watching two-vs-four-way stop signs and more)? There's no cost for the 35-minute hands-on training provided by Alameda County’s Safe Routes to School.
If you‘d like attend, please email Thousand Oaks PTA member Helen Toy ( as soon as possible to confirm. We need at least thirty (30) students to sign up for the training. Indicate in the email whether you prefer either a morning or mid-afternoon training.

Both the City of Berkeley and Alameda County are encouraging this training to increase students’ awareness of pedestrian safety and avoid collisions between cars and bikers/pedestrians. For more information visit the The Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools (SR2S) website at
