Message from the Principal

Dear Emerson Community,

As we move into the busy holiday season, the days are getting shorter and colder.  It is a good time to revisit a few safety procedures and practices so we are all healthy and happy. At school we make time for students to wash their hands before they eat lunch.  At home you can help us reinforce this simple habit, which goes far to prevent illness.  If your student does get a fever, vomit or have diarrhea, they need to stay home for 24 hours after the fever and illness breaks.  Don’t forget to call the office or send a note to excuse your student from school. Please remember that we do not have before- school care.  Staff join students on the playground at 8:00 am.  Please arrange for your students to be supervised before and after school.

We hope you will join us for the Dad’s Club Movie Night Fundraiser tomorrow, Friday, November 15th, 6:00- 8:30 pm.  The cost is $15 per child although no one is turned away.  Pre-K children must be accompanied by an adult, who will stay for the movie. Bring your sleeping bag, pajamas, and a water bottle, but please leave the valuables and candy behind.  We look forward to a fun evening watching The Lion King together. Thanks, Dads Club!

Picture retakes are on Thursday, November 21.  If you would like to order prints you will need to complete the order form that is available from your student’s teacher or the main office.

We will have a lockdown/fire drill on Friday, November 22.  We will make this kid-friendly, with the goal of preparing students for a serious event without scaring them during the drill.  We will describe the lockdown to students in kid-friendly terms, such as “police in the area” and that we must practice being “quiet”.  We will then evacuate to the playground for a fire drill as we have previously done.  If you have any questions please let me know.

The School Site Council is Wednesday, November 20 at 5:30 pm and PTA is at 7:00 pm.  We hope to see you there!

A big thank you to Ms. Michele Hlubinka for livening up our main hallway with the Staff, Math and Green Corner bulletin boards.  If you haven’t taken a look, check them out, they are fun, inspirational and educational.

Thank you for your support and have a great day.

Respectfully,

Jana Holmes, Principal

Join Berkeley Schools Volunteers Nov. 21st Training: “Demystifying Common Core Math for Classroom/Parent Volunteers”

Berkeley Schools Volunteers is the district-wide program that recruits, screens, and trains hundreds of community volunteers each year to support classroom learning across every BUSD school.

Berkeley Schools Volunteers is offering a free training for ALL classroom volunteers (both parent and community) on how to best support elementary math learning in this new era of the Common Core. Taught in partnership with BUSD’s district math coach, this experiential workshop will demystify the “new math” and focus on what classroom volunteers (and even parents at home!) should and shouldn’t be doing or saying to support our students’ deepest mathematical thinking.

This training is for everyone – even those who don’t currently think of themselves as “math people.” Don't miss this eye-opening learning experience!

Thursday, Nov 21st, 3 to 5 pm
District Office: 2020 Bonar Street, 1st floor, Room 126

Calling All Emerson Scholars: Strut Your Smarts!

This week the hallway outside the cafetorium debuted a new take on Emerson’s ever-popular Math Wall: now an infinite puzzle palace! You’ll still see lots of math challenges on there, but now it’ll feed your neurons way more than just numbers. All Emerson scholars grades K to 5: come by to stretch your mind and show us what you’ve got. Keep your pencils and your eyes sharp, because the wall will be both infinite and random: new challenges will pop up when you least expect ‘em.

Pedestrian Safety Training on Saturday November 16

Would you like your children to be trained in safety procedures as they walk to and from school and around town (observing traffic lights, looking for oncoming cars, watching two-vs-four-way stop signs and more)? There's no cost for the 35-minute hands-on training provided by Alameda County’s Safe Routes to School.

If you‘d like attend, please email Thousand Oaks PTA member Helen Toy (helen_toy@yahoo.com) as soon as possible to confirm. We need at least thirty (30) students to sign up for the training. Indicate in the email whether you prefer either a morning or mid-afternoon training.

Both the City of Berkeley and Alameda County are encouraging this training to increase students’ awareness of pedestrian safety and avoid collisions between cars and bikers/pedestrians. For more information visit the The Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools (SR2S) website at http://alamedacountysr2s.org
