Message from the Principal

Dear Emerson Community,
Thank you for your patience and faith during the dangerous fire scare.  Although we did have a backup plan, we are glad that the power stayed on at Emerson.  We encourage you to check your Remind messages, which are utilized for emergency updates.  The staff at Emerson is dedicated to your student’s safety and well-being.  We monitor the Air Quality Index and communicate with the District Superintendent’s office in order to make up to the minute decisions regarding PE, recess and after school activities.  We appreciate our dedicated volunteers who have offered to help.  We are accepting donations of flashlights and battery or solar-powered lanterns for future times of need.  You can bring them to the main office if you are willing or able.
We have many exciting events planned for this week. On Tuesday students were treated to a performance by the Berkeley Symphony.  On Wednesday, we learned about Digital Citizenry at a special PTA presentation.  On Thursday, Oct 31 we enjoyed our Traditional Halloween Parade. The All School Meeting on Friday, November 1st will include special performances by our 3rd through 5th-grade students- please join us.  What an amazing week for students, families, and staff!
Please note that school will not be in session on Monday, November 4, due to teacher preparation for conferences. Tuesday, November 5 through Friday, November 8 are minimum days, with Kindergarten students released at 12:30 pm and First through Fifth Grades released at 1:10 pm each day.  Kids World will be offered right after school, but Enrichment Classes are canceled.
We thank you for your support of Emerson and hope you have a great day.
Jana Holmes, Principal

Dia de los Muertos at Emerson

Emerson will be celebrating Dia de los Muertos, on Friday, November 1 in the library. In the weeks leading up to Dia de los Muertos, Ms. Zoe will be reading books about the holiday. Students, staff and families are invited to bring pictures and/or mementos of a loved one to put on the ofrenda.
Emerson Equity Corner: Día de los Muertos

This year, Día de los Muertos begins on Thursday, Oct. 31 and ends on Saturday, Nov. 2.

Día de los muertos literally translates to Day of the Dead. Death may be a focal point of Day of the Dead, but the tone is festive, not sad or scary. This holiday is really all about celebrating life.

Traditionally, family and friends gather to joyfully remember their loved ones who have passed. The festivities are splashed with color. Dancers and participants are often decked in costumes of bright fabric. Face painting is also popular. It is likely that you will see many skeletons and skulls. Aztec marigolds are a frequent sight and can be seen on altars and in people's hair, creating waves of yellow gold. Some believe that these vibrant and pungent flowers help guide the spirits of the dead to their altars. Papél picado, images cut into neon tissue paper, hang in the air like colorful snowflakes and cross the streets.

People also erect beautiful altars called ofrendas, often decorated with images that honor the deceased. Families and friends might partake in their loved ones' favorite activities or meals as a way to respect their legacy.  Whether you celebrate Day of the Dead or not, honoring and respecting those we have loved and lost is a beautiful way to remember them. Discovery Zone Volunteers Needed!

The Discovery Zone is a weekly lunch recess play group for kids who don't want to play on the play yard. We meet in the garden area, with a small number of students, and they can do coloring, puzzles, games and other activities. It’s led by parent volunteers, and we could use a few more so we can offer these activities more frequently. We have supplies and just need some additional parent supervision and set-up/clean-up help. If you’d like to find out more, please contact Yona at
Walkathon Pledges

Pedestrian Safety Training on Saturday November 16

Would you like your children to be trained in safety procedures as they walk to and from school and around town (observing traffic lights, looking for oncoming cars, watching two-vs-four-way stop signs and more)? There's no cost for the 35-minute hands-on training provided by Alameda County’s Safe Routes to School.
If you‘d like attend, please email Thousand Oaks PTA member Helen Toy ( as soon as possible to confirm. We need at least thirty (30) students to sign up for the training. Indicate in the email whether you prefer either a morning or mid-afternoon training.

Both the City of Berkeley and Alameda County are encouraging this training to increase students’ awareness of pedestrian safety and avoid collisions between cars and bikers/pedestrians. For more information visit the The Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools (SR2S) website at
