Bloomin' News April 9, 2019
I love spring! (big shock). Walking through Bronson Park, the Daffodils are blooming, the birds are singing, and the beds are awaiting the beauty we will add in May.

I am humbled and so proud of the recent Women’s Lifestyle article featuring Monika and me on the cover representing Kalamazoo in Bloom, and the Second Wave Media article highlighting Eastside Neighborhood residents, this month on me as a 32-year resident. Both of these focus on community. Without neighbors, friends, volunteers, and people who care, projects such as our beautification cannot be accomplished. I get to work with and live near wonderful, caring folks who are willing to help in so many ways.

Most of our plants are started at the greenhouse. Colors are starting to pop on other plants which were planted a few weeks ago. So even if it is still gray outside, there is beautiful color inside.

Prior to our 2-week flurry of May plantings, I have to finish the Oval Project we began last fall but got stopped by early cold weather. On Saturday, May 4, I’m looking for volunteers to finish clearing the layer of sod out of the remaining 2 oval beds on Rose Street. Plan to start about 9 am. Bring a shovel (square end) or a garden claw, gloves, and muscles. Once the final 2 ovals are clear of grass, then they will be planted with beautiful Daylilies from existing beds. With a good group, we should be able to finish in a couple of hours. Good opportunity for volunteers who are unable to join us on our planting days during the work week. Let me know if you can help. Email me and check out this Facebook event.

If you haven’t already marked your calendars, here are our planting days. Activities all start at 9 AM. Sign up to plant here. To adopt a bed, click here.
