The June 2017 issue of National Geographic featured a great article titled “A Look at 2017, From 1917.” The article is based on a 1917 speech by Alexander Graham Bell titled “Prizes for the Inventor: Some of the Problems Awaiting Solution.”
Bell reflected on the amazing period of time preceding 1917 in which the electric light bulb, the telegraph, the telephone, the photograph, automobiles and airplanes had been invented. However, the main emphasis of the then 69-year-old Bell’s speech was on what the future would bring. He predicted “the commercial airplane, solar panels, and the need for renewable resources.” He had an incredible passion for looking into the future and imagining advances that would solve the problems of his day and shape the future.
Today, 100 years after Bell’s speech and the founding of WSRAR in 1917, we are reflecting back over how far our industry, our profession, our community and WSRAR have come in the last 100 years. We are archiving this history in a commemorative book which will come out later this year.
Like Bell, we are also looking forward. How will the decisions we make today affect the next 100 years? What will WSRAR look like in the future? How can we best serve our members as the industry evolves and is transformed by technology?
These are exciting times we live in. Change is coming fast. Your Realtor leadership at the local, state and national levels are committed to being a proactive voice in shaping the future!
FROM THE DESK OF SAMUEL AUBREY
As someone born in the state of Texas, I am deeply touched by the outpouring of support from REALTOR® members in North Carolina and across the country. I am also thankful for the countless volunteers who are performing amazing acts of selfless service to those in need. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those in harm’s way. My family has made a commitment to support the ongoing efforts of so many already. As your Association, we are exploring ways to answer the call to show our collective support, as well. Your individual efforts are also greatly appreciated.
