Happy New Year and Happy Anniversary!
January 1 marked the 100th Anniversary of the founding of our local Association of REALTORS®! We look forward to celebrating this milestone with you throughout the year.
On January 3 a delegation of our members attended the Winston-Salem City Council Meeting where Mayor Allen Joines and Councilman and REALTOR® Jeff MacIntosh presented our Association with a special resolution honoring our 100 years of service to this community. Thank you to the members who joined us at City Hall.
Tuesday, January 17 will be a very special opportunity to recognize the leaders of this Association over the past 100 years. Please join us at WinMock at Kinderton for our “Salute to Presidents” and to kick off our 100-Year Celebration. A special thank you to Fairway Independent Mortgage for being the lead sponsor of this special evening honoring our Past Presidents.  There is more information in this newsletter.
This event will also be our opportunity to thank your 2016 President, Thomas Maier, and his team for their outstanding service; and we will be installing your 2017 Officers and Directors for the Association and its Divisions.
When I was last honored to serve as your President, in 1997, I finished my term by asking “How Do you Measure A Year?”, as asked in Jonathon Larson’s hit musical “Rent.”  Little did I know that 20 years later I would have the opportunity to return to this position, and lead a year-long discussion on “How Do You Measure 100 Years?”  We want to hear from our members on how you measure 100 years of REALTORS® in our community. Do you have stories that should be included?  Do you have memorabilia that could be displayed this year or included in a commemorative book? Please contact Glenda McCormick at 336-768-5560 or
Thank you for the honor of serving you as your President during this special year. Thank you to the 100th Anniversary Committee which has worked hard planning this year’s events. Thank you to our terrific staff! Thank you again to Thomas Maier and our outgoing Board Members and Committee Chairs for a job well done!
P.S. We hope to make this our best year ever. We need your help. If you have not signed up for a 2017 Committee, please let us know and we will find you an area in which to serve.

Making the Most of Your Membership
By Samuel Aubrey
There is no doubt we will see some changes in the real estate industry in 2017. How much and what type are yet to be determined. However, one thing is certain: As a REALTOR®, you have access to resources, tools, and a network of real estate professionals and experts to assist you every step of the way.

Whether your need is to increase business opportunities, enhance client services, or to stay apprised of advocacy efforts and hot-topic issues affecting the real estate industry and market, your REALTOR® Association is poised to help you make the most of your membership.

Our strength is in our numbers—as of this writing, 1,230,088 REALTOR® members strong. When you made the decision to become a REALTOR®, you expanded and extended your reach with membership in all three levels of the REALTOR® association: local, state, and national.

Your REALTOR® membership provides a framework for effective communication, delivery of products and services, and enforcement of the Code of Ethics. Altogether, REALTORS® facilitate the existence of a sound and dynamic U.S. real estate market that creates vibrant communities in which to live and work.

On behalf of all the staff, thank you for your membership and continued support of the Winston Salem Regional Association of REALTORS®.  We look forward to an exciting and fun-filled year as we celebrate our 100th year as an association. If you have any questions about your REALTOR® membership, please contact your association staff, myself included, at your convenience.  We welcome your involvement, input, and enthusiasm as we work together to help you get the most out of your membership.

Thank you, again!

Q. How much are new boxes?
A. They are available at WSRAR for $115+tax.
Q. Can I sell my boxes?
A. You may sell your boxes to an active WSRAR member. You may not sell them to a member of another association.
Q. Can I buy boxes from another agent?
A. Yes, you can buy boxes from a WSRAR member. Please email us a list of the box serial numbers so we can be sure the boxes are properly assigned to you. This will insure the warranty will remain in effect. We STRONGLY recommend you do not purchase boxes online. Often these boxes cannot be used in our area because of internal system codes or they may be at the end of their battery life. These boxes are not covered by any kind of warranty.
Q. What should I do with a defective box?
A. Call SUPRA first to confirm it is defective: 877-699-6787. Once you have confirmed it is defective, you can either cut it off the door or remove the door knob and slide it off. You will bring it to the WSRAR for a replacement.
Q. What if the key is still inside the box?
A. If at all possible, SUPRA will return the key(s) to WSRAR and we will contact you. However, there is a multiple week turnaround time for receiving keys back. We STRONGLY recommend you have an extra set of all keys placed in any type of keybox.
Q. Where can I go for more information about using the boxes?
A. Please visit:

Contributions are not deductible for income tax purposes. Contributions to RPAC are voluntary and are used for political purposes. You may contribute more or less than the suggested amount. You may refuse to contribute without reprisal and the National Association of REALTORS® or any of its state associations or local boards will not favor or disfavor any member because of the amount contributed. 70% of each contribution is used by your state PAC to support state and local political candidates. Until your state PAC reaches its RPAC goal 30% is sent to National RPAC to support federal candidates and is charged against your limits under 2 U.S.C. 441a; after the state PAC reaches its RPAC goal it may elect to retain your entire contribution for use in supporting state and local candidates.
Two WSRAR leaders have been appointed by the National Association of REALTORS® as Federal Political Coordinators (“FPCs”). Under NCAR’s FPC Program, one member is appointed to be the national association’s primary liaison to a member of Congress. NAR states, “the role of the FPC plays within NAR advocacy is extremely important. Each serves as an educator to/influencer of their member of Congress with respect to the issues important to the real estate industry."
Lou Baldwin has been appointed as FPC to U.S. Senator Richard Burr. Lou has held this position through Senator Burr’s 5 terms in the House of Representatives and is now in his third term in the U.S. Senate. Lou was recognized for his efforts as the first recipient of the NC REALTORS'
® FPC of the Year Award.
Thomas Maier has been appointed as FPC to newly elected Congressman Ted Budd, representing North Carolina’s 13th Congressional District. Thomas got off to a great start in this position by leading a meeting with then Congressman-Elect Budd at WSRAR offices on December 20th.
Lou and Thomas will participate in an FPC Training and Federal Policy Conference in Washington, DC on February 7-9 and then will lead meetings with their Members of Congress on Capitol Hill during NAR’s REALTOR
® Party Meetings, May 15-20 .
