March is the beginning of busy season, hopefully the final few cold snaps and the threshold of spring.  It also tends to be the season that congress begins to take issues to the next level if they are seriously considering taking action in that session.  As a result, the new tax plan in Washington has been presented.  Within that plan are some issues concerning home ownership and tax considerations for homeowners that would increase tax burdens on homeowners.  I am sure we will be asking you to talk with your members of congress about those issues that NAR feels will need to be addressed.  To that end, here is a link to NAR President Steve Brown’s response to the proposed tax revisions that will be considered in 2014.  Please take time to review this important information.  Thank you in advance for being able to respond to Calls for Action as they are issued this year.  Should you have any questions or suggestions, I would love to hear from you.  My email address is  I hope each of you have an incredibly busy March!

Joint Government Affairs Director

Inform your Government Affairs Director!

The Home Builders Association of Winston-Salem and the Winston-Salem Regional Association of REALTORS® membership lives and works in five counties!  That’s a lot of villages, towns and cities where local governments can influence the rules, codes, ordinances and regulations that impact our industry.

As your Government Affairs Director, I can’t be everywhere and hear about everything impacting your community.  I rely on the membership as my feet on the ground.  A lot of the meetings, briefings, town and city council hearings I attend are based on your recommendations from the membership.  You are active in your local communities and are involved with local issues.  You are neighbors and friends with your elected officials and talk with them on a regular basis.

Inform me if you hear of anything that might be of interest or impacts our industry.  Some examples of different meetings that are coming up or have been recently held include the Davie County/Bermuda Run Economic Development Update in March.  A recent meeting in Village of Clemmons to brainstorm issues for the future as well as storm water regulation issues with the City.  I look forward to hearing from you!
