Welcome to our Autumn update

Over the summer I have been working on a strategic review at the request of our Board of Trustees. The review is an opportunity to think about our direction as an organisation and to plan for the future against a background of great change in the external world.

As part of the work, I have spoken with our funders as well as several of our partner agencies. It is heartening to hear that icap is held in high regard as a professional and specialist service. I've also been to visit seven other agencies offering counselling and psychotherapy and benchmarked our service against other organisations doing similar work.

Closer to home, I have attended a CPD event and two team meetings to talk about the work. I've also been working with the London and Birmingham teams to gather more data from client files. You can read more about our findings below. The development of a new strategy is an important journey for the organisation and I am very keen to ensure that everyone working for or supporting icap is part of that journey. If you would like to hear more about the strategy review or to have your say, please do not hesitate to contact me at the Moray Rd office.

Client Data 2015

In our last newsletter, we shared some information regarding the clients seen in 2015. Following a review of client files in London and Birmingham, we now know a great deal more about the lives of the people who use our service.

Our clients are getting younger. In 2015, there was a decline in the number of new clients over the age of 60, with 31% of new clients comprising of individuals under 40 years. Clients under 40 encompassed 19% of all clients seen in London during 2015.
One in three clients are working and the remainder are retired, unemployed or describe themselves as being long-term sick or disabled.

One third of our clients have seen or are currently seeing a psychiatrist and one third describe themselves as having a disability.

Our clients are diversely educated. One fifth of our clients hold a degree level qualification
(21%), whilst a similar number have no qualifications (23%).

The majority of London clients stay in therapy for less than one year (46%). Only a small number remain in therapy for 1-2 years (15%), 2-4 years (9%) or beyond.

icap West Midlands update

icap West Midlands has become one of the founder members of the Midlands Partnership
Group, which aims to improve and extend services to Irish people as well as helping to facilitate sustainability through collaboration. As part of this joint initiative, Liz Daw, icap’s Centre Manager in Birmingham, ran a training session for the group on 'Building a mentally healthy workplace', showing how a range of simple tools and techniques can significantly improve the wellbeing of staff. Feedback was very positive with many members hoping to adopt some of the ideas suggested.
