Nikki Chooi on the job

Nikki Chooi (2013 Michael Hill winner and newly appointed Concertmaster of the Met) is underway with the opera season opening this weekend, and what a weekend it will be! Nikki is involved in Don Giovanni and L’Italiana in Algeri (the other two operas opening this weekend are Tristan und Isolde and La Boheme).

He says "It has been a thrilling experience so far. I am learning so much and falling in love with the opera repertoire very quickly."

Meet the Selection Panel

After the applications are received, this dedicated and skilled team of leading New Zealand and Australian violinists, representing a number of significant ensembles, will convene to undertake the grueling task of selecting the 16 quarter-finalists that will be invited to compete in the 2017 Michael Hill.  They are Andrew Beer (APO Concertmaster), Justine Cormack (NZTrio), Vesa-Matti Leppanen (NZSO concertmaster), Helene Pohl (NZ String Quartet), and the Competition’s Artistic Adviser, Dene Olding (Sydney Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster and first violin of the Goldner String Quartet).

It has become necessary to add an additional heat to adequately review an increasing number of applications (the 2015 competition received a record 158 entries) and, whereas until now the identity of the initial applicants has been kept secret from the selection panel, their identities and accomplishments will be revealed for the final heat of the selection process.

Executive Director Anne Rodda says, “Recordings will always be the best tool our industry has for auditions, but we have come to the view that the Michael Hill is more about the whole artist and not just the ability and resources to create an impeccable audition tape.

Riccardo Bergonzi

On a recent Italian holiday, Executive Director Anne Rodda, visited Cremona and was able to catch up with Riccardo in his studio.   Riccardo has generously gifted one of his contemporary violins to the Michael Hill to support and encourage up and coming violinists.
