Submit bios, headshots for CAMP program

By Lauren M. Whaley, President-Elect

Every year, we create a program book at CAMP. In the book, you'll find panel descriptions, speaker bios and, most importantly, YOUR bio and photo. This year, we're using SCHED again as our online scheduling tool. And we're excited that it has a way to input your own information â€” photo and bio — so that our volunteers or executive director don't have to do it all manually.

Here's the catch: YOU have to input YOUR OWN information. You will have received an invite to SCHED with your registration confirmation. If not, visit our SCHED and click "sign up," then enter in your information as an attendee. Your contact information will not be visible to other people, but your bio and picture will be. Then, we can use this for the program book.

If you have questions, please email me. Bios need to be inputted by Oct. 12 for inclusion in this year's book. If you don't enter your information, you will not be in the program book. :(

Many thanks!

Sign up for one-on-one tech sessions

By Sandra Fish, JAWS Vice President

We've got some great tech training coming up next month in Vermont. Check out our sessions.

We're also organizing some one-on-one sessions Friday afternoon, Sunday afternoon and potentially other times when we can match people up. Would you like one-on-one tech training at CAMP? Or can you offer one-on-one help? If so, please fill out this Google form, and I'll match you up!

Looking forward to seeing folks in Vermont!

CAMP photographers wanted

By Becky Day, JAWS Executive Director

Photographers and photojournalists: Are you coming to CAMP? We need your talents to help record the great moments that make CAMP so special.

If you can bring your camera and help us capture some high-resolution images of speakers, sessions, meals and candid shots that illustrate the mentoring, personal growth and fun at CAMP, please be part of our photo team. Once we have our team, we’ll make general assignments to make sure important events are covered and share the load so one person doesn’t have to be everywhere.

Please let Becky know if you can join the photo team. And thanks in advance for stepping up to help with this important task.

Saying “cheese,”
Becky

Silent auction keeps CAMP tradition

By Peg Simpson, JAWS Board Member

We hope you CAMPers will be culling your collections to bring to our Silent Auction some dazzling jewelry, signed art pieces, special journalism memorabilia and more. This year, we are inaugurating an online auction — but the hands-on Silent Auction remains an essential part of CAMP. And we depend on all of you to bring potential treasures ... for other CAMPers.

These can go well beyond jewelry or scarves; think of what you bid on in the past but lost out to another CAMPer. That's the sign of a good auction item! Remember these need to be packable. You can fill out an auction form once you're at CAMP and then can begin to bid early and often!

Dress code for CAMP: Casual

By Becky Day, Executive Director

CAMP is a time to build career skills, enrich the spirit and relax with colleagues. We also schedule ample free time for CAMPers to explore the area, mentor each other and catch up with old friends. Dress is casual. Leave the power suits behind! Pack your jeans, your favorite T-shirt (maybe a sweatshirt, as well, because it’s October in Vermont) and comfy shoes. Veteran campers will likely be sporting this year's CAMP T-shirt. Bring your hiking shoes if you want to hit the trail; bring your walking shoes if you want to hit the great shops in Burlington. Be comfortable and ready for a great weekend.

There's still time to join the event of the year

By Becky Day, Executive Director

If you haven't already, sign up for CAMP in Vermont now.

The JAWS Conference and Mentoring Project (CAMP) offers a three-day weekend of training on visual storytelling, healthcare reporting, food policy politics, data reporting and funding your dream journalism project, plus New York Times Executive Editor Jill Abramson as our keynote speaker. Merrill Perlman and Teresa Schmedding of the American Copy Editors Society will tell “reporters without editors” how to avoid embarrassing mistakes, plagiarism and fabrication, black eyes on the journalism industry. Also, Jacqui Banaszynski will be giving tips about the art of the interview. Take advantage of all this while experiencing lovely autumn colors and beautiful scenery at The Essex Culinary Resort & Spa in Essex, Vt.

CAMP will be held Oct. 25 - 28, 2013. Registration includes most meals, but does not include hotel costs.

Book your hotel

By Becky Day,
JAWS Executive Director

If you still need a room, there is space available at the Courtyard Marriott (just five miles and less than 20 minutes from the Essex). JAWS members can get a king studio suite with one king bed and a pullout sofa for $129 per night Oct. 25 – 27. There is a two-night minimum stay required to get this rate, and it does not include the Marriott breakfast (but that’s OK because you’ll have breakfast at the Essex as part of your CAMP registration).

IMPORTANT: We've passed the original deadline for this reduced rate, and you will need a manager's OK to get it. When you make your reservation, ask to speak to Sarah or Mandi. They are the only people that can authorize the reduced price. The Marriott has a shuttle that seats seven, and it will bring CAMPers to the Essex. Call 802-879-0100 to make your reservation.

And don’t forget to use the listserv to find a roommate and share travel and lodging info with fellow CAMPers on our shared Google doc.

Look forward to seeing you at CAMP!
