Register for CAMP

Last chance before rates go up

By Becky Day, Executive Director

Sign up for CAMP in Vermont now before the regular $375 rate expires today, Sept. 30.

The JAWS Conference and Mentoring Project (CAMP) offers a three-day weekend of training on visual storytelling, healthcare reporting, food policy politics, data reporting and funding your dream journalism project, plus New York Times Executive Editor Jill Abramson as our keynote speaker. Merrill Perlman and Teresa Schmedding of the American Copy Editors Society will tell “reporters without editors” how to avoid embarrassing mistakes and avoid plagiarism and fabrication, black eyes on the journalism industry. Also, Jacqui Banaszynski will be giving tips about the art of the interview. Take advantage of all this while experiencing lovely autumn colors and beautiful scenery at The Essex Culinary Resort & Spa in Essex, Vt.

CAMP will be held Oct. 25 - 28, 2013. Registration includes most meals, but does not include hotel costs.

Don't forget to book your hotel

By Becky Day,
JAWS Executive Director

We are delighted to report that CAMP registrations are pouring in! However, that also means that rooms at the Essex are sold out, so we are finding additional accommodations at the nearby Marriott Courtyard (802-879-0100) to handle the overflow.

I’ve contracted with the Marriott Courtyard (just five miles and less then 20 minutes from the Essex) to offer JAWS members a king studio suite with one king bed and a pullout sofa for $129 per night Oct. 25 – 27. There is a two-night minimum stay required to get this rate, and it does not include the Marriott breakfast (but that’s OK because you’ll have breakfast at the Essex as part of your CAMP registration). The deadline for making a hotel reservation at this discounted rate is Oct. 4.

I hope the deal on the room will help compensate for not being at the Essex and make it possible for you to come to CAMP. We’ll work out carpooling to get JAWS campers to and from the Courtyard and the Essex.

Call 802-879-0100 to make your reservation at the Courtyard.

And don’t forget to use the listserv to find a roommate and share travel and lodging info with fellow campers on our shared Google doc.

Look forward to seeing you at CAMP!

Friday5 pledges five-year support to JAWS

By Lisen Stromberg, JAWS Board Member

JAWS is excited to announce that we have been selected by Friday5 as one of their chosen causes next month.

Started by Mike Berman, the first head of sales at Eventbrite, Friday5 benefits select causes by bringing to bear the collective power of giving. Each of its members pledges to donate (automatically donates) $5 per week (to a curated cause). Friday5 does the work of vetting causes and distributing the pooled funds to the lucky beneficiaries. Think of it as charity on autopilot.

Oct. 4 is our big day. With its more than 200 members (and growing), that translates to at least $1,000 for JAWS and our fellowship program this year alone. And, Friday5 has committed to having JAWS be its first Friday in October cause for the next five years! As they grow, so will their support of our important efforts to ensure women's voices help frame the news. What a wonderful boost to the great work of bringing emerging journalists to CAMP for the networking, training and mentoring we provide.

Follow Friday5 on Twitter, Facebook and Google+. You can read about Friday5 in Forbes, and watch the promotional video.

CAMP photographers wanted

By Becky Day, JAWS Executive Director

Photographers and photojournalists: Are you coming to CAMP? We need your talents to help record the great moments that make CAMP so special.

If you can bring your camera and help us capture some high-resolution images of speakers, sessions, meals and candid shots that illustrate the mentoring, personal growth and fun at CAMP, please be part of our photo team. Once we have our team, we’ll make general assignments to make sure important events are covered and share the load so one person doesn’t have to be everywhere.

Please let Becky know if you can join the photo team. And thanks in advance for stepping up to help with this important task.

Saying “cheese,”
Becky
