ACLF Newsletter September 2022

Hi everyone,

It’s been a whirlwind month attending different venues and festivals. First stop was Newcastle, NSW where I spoke at the Museum of Art and Culture on the shores of Lake Macquarie to groups of primary school kids. I also met with local CBCA members, authors and illustrators. It was a very short trip but such a memorable one as I met so many lovely people.

My next stop was the Melbourne Writers Festival where I spoke to around 600 plus students across 3 days at the State Library of Victoria. Then the Write Around the Murray Festival in Albury. It has been great to be engaging with the local schools and school children.

Next month I am looking forward to the Lift Off! Festival in Hobart, Tasmania and the Headland Festival in Tathra, NSW. You can read more about that later in the newsletter. I love to travel where I can meet new people, see new places and talk about books, writing and dragons. I hope to see you soon.

Every month we are bringing you an exciting new activity from our Laureate Gabrielle Wang encouraging everyone to exercise their imagination.

MEET THE LAUREATE AT LIFT OFF!

The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) is delighted to offer workshops with the Australian Children’s Laureate for 2022 and 2023, Gabrielle Wang at the Lift Off! Festival for children and young people. Join Gabrielle to hear about her inspiration and how she illustrates and writes her stories. Participants will learn how to go about writing a story and how to draw a dragon!

Gabrielle will also be reading from her latest book Zadie Ma and the dog who chased the moon at a special midday session in the Central Gallery at TMAG where you will be able to purchase a signed copy.

Gabrielle had an exciting CBCA Book Week 2022, including a visit to the Lake Macquarie Museum for Art and Culture (MAC). She carried out workshops for local school children and took part in a lovely afternoon tea with members of the local CBCA NSW Sub-Branch.

Imagine A Story on Audiobook

Love Your Bookshop Day

8 October 2022

We love our local booksellers so on Saturday 8 October Follow Your Heart all the way to a bookshop and celebrate a love of books.

On this #LYBD2022 it’s a great opportunity to connect or re-connect with booksellers and books and remember how important reading is for children and adults alike.

Laureates Online

Available Now

Laureates Online is a fantastic offering from the Australian Children’s Laureate Foundation featuring our wonderfully talented Laureates.

Ursula Dubosarsky talks about Show Don't Tell, Write What You Know and Writing the First Draft, while Alison Lester shows you How to Create a Picture Book step by step.

The presentations are free to schools with 100 students or less or with an ICSEA rating below 1000. Other schools will be charged a small fee with all funds going to support the Laureate Program.
