10 Ways to Survive a Divorce
A divorce is one of the most emotional and financially costly life event you will ever endure. Here are my top 10 suggestions to make a divorce easier to win and survive.
  1. Follow your lawyer’s advice. You chose the lawyer. You are paying the lawyer.  If you don’t like or trust the advice you are getting, change lawyers.
  2. Make the most of the evidence you have. You can’t change the law, the facts or the evidence, but you can make the most of what you have.
  3. Save the documents. Documents include texts, all social media of any kind, tax returns, bank records, retirement records, investment account records, house refinance records and credit card records.
  4. Change your password on everything and change it to something your spouse will not guess. That means change the password on e-mail, telephone, bills, banking, credit cards, investment accounts, etc.
  5. Do not create negative evidence by putting anything in writing that you don’t want read back to you in court. No texts, no e-mails, no social media. It doesn’t matter if you think it is private, anything in writing will eventually become public.
  6. Read what your lawyer sends you and answer every question your lawyer asks. Don’t make the lawyer repeatedly ask for information. That costs you money unnecessarily. The lawyer is asking the question for a reason. Perhaps it is to see if there are facts to support a possible strategy. Perhaps it is to see if there are problems the lawyer needs to work around in the evidence.
  7. If you move out, take all your personal belongings with you. Take everything that is yours. Sadly, things will be broken, missing or hidden by the time you come back.
  8. Be careful who you complain to about your spouse. The person who is a friend today may not be a friend tomorrow.
  9. Behave like an angel – Let the lawyer worry about going after the other side, not cleaning up your messes. That means – don’t’ drink and drive. Don’t use illegal drugs or abuse prescription drugs. Yes, marijuana is still an illegal drug in Texas.
  10. Don’t date during the divorce. In Texas you are married until the judge signs the divorce decree.
