2015 YEAR-END REVIEW

From Executive Director Kellie Johnston:

"During 2015, Cawaco assisted with 111 workshops and/or meetings, impacted 25 schools, engaged 97 communities, helped educate 8,783 children and 3,168 adults, and helped upgrade or improve 17 public facilities.
We managed this outcome with a staff of two! Cawaco gets things accomplished through partnerships,  contracts, grant services, and good old fashioned hard work.
We are guided and supported by a very active Board of Directors. Our Board keeps us in touch with the communities we serve, and brings projects and community needs to our attention." Learn more

"Cawaco had a busy, productive 2015, and it looks as though 2016 will be even better! Cawaco will be hosting the 2016 AARC&DC Annual Meeting, May 2-4"
CAWACO: WORKING IN ALABAMA COMMUNITIES
Greenhouses for schools and community gardens: Thompson HS and Southeastern HS were both awarded a Cawaco greenhouse free of charge. Find out how your school can win a greenhouse!
Cawaco was able to purchase 5 new kayaks for  Walker County! The kayaks are available to Boy Scouts and other groups to provide recreational and educational opportunities to youth throughout the area.
Cawaco Initiatives:
Seeds for Gardens: In 2015, Cawaco distributed over 1,000 pounds of seed to community and school gardens throughout the state. We are currently making seed deliveries. Does your community or school garden need seed? Apply here.

Top Soil and Mulch: Cawaco has formed an alliance with Scotts Lawn Care to supply community and school gardens with top soil and mulch, free of charge. Contact us for more information.

The Tool Trailer got a good bit of use in 2015! 849 volunteers used the trailer to clear over 17 miles of trails in places like Turkey Creek Nature Preserve, Red Mountain Park and Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve! Cawaco keeps the tool trailer maintained and available to volunteer groups.

Cawaco was among the first to invest in the revitalization of the Lyric Theatre. In 2009, Cawaco provided a grant to restore the Lyric sign, which included painstakingly matching the color with the original 1913 logo. This gorgeous, historic showplace will open in January 2016.  Watch a video about the restoration here.
Grand Opening performances of Modern Vaudville at the Lyric Theatre Thursday, Jan. 14- Saturday, Jan. 16. Tickets go on sale Friday, Dec. 4 at 10 a.m. at lyricbham.com and (205) 216-3118.
In FY2015, Cawaco awarded six fire departments over $20,000.00 in grants. Summit received a grant from Cawaco to hydrostatic test their scba bottles as well as buy new, lighter weight bottles. These devices help our heroic first responders breath during a fire or hazardous situation.
