Winter Break | Highlights

We spent an incredible, emotional, and powerful week in Poland. We challenged ourselves to walk in the steps of our ancestors, to come face to face with the horror of the Holocaust, and to hold our heads high with pride in the resiliency of the Jewish People. We leave this trip sad, a little broken, and incredibly honored and proud to be Jewish.

Students also spend their winter break in Israel! Two buses of Penn State students traveled to Israel for a 10-day journey through old and new Israel. They uncovered the history of the land, the people, and the state. Together they formed an unbreakable bond, strengthened their Jewish identities and connected to the global Jewish community.

Onward Israel | Join the Bus

Penn State Hillel Onward Israel participants will be matched with internships that connect to their creative passion and offer real-world experience in unique fields towards what they are hoping to achieve at Penn State. Participants will explore Israel and experience living like a local with other Penn State students in Tel Aviv!

Penn State Hillel Onward program is geared towards students from Penn State looking to live and work in Israel over the summer. This opportunity stretches to a variety of different internship placements and allows students to gain experience in an international community. Students will get to live with other Penn State students on top of travel and learn throughout the experience.

This Onward Israel program is operated through a partnership between the Beacon and Shapira Foundations and other leading philanthropists, and Masa Israel Journey.

Participants on Onward Israel programs that are run in partnership with Masa may return to Israel on long-term Masa programs after Onward Israel. They may also be eligible for additional scholarships from Masa to help fund their participation, although the size of that scholarship may be influenced by prior participation on Onward Israel. For details please contact Masa Israel Journey directly.

Masa-eligible participants in programs which are part of the Onward/Masa partnership may qualify for additional scholarships. For more information, call Onward Israel or your local partner professional.

Penn State Hillel is offering a 10-week learning course! The JLF is a 10-week experiential, pluralistic, conversational seminar for students looking to deepen their understanding of Judaism on their own terms. JLF adds two critical components to traditional study:
  • It builds a cohort of students within each class who befriend one another and create a community.
  • It teaches classical Jewish texts by drawing on the life experience and intuition of college students themselves.

The JLF cohort will consist of 20 students. No experience with Jewish learning or text study is required! We rely on your life experience and intuition to drive the conversation.  Upon completion of the JLF, students earn a $300 stipend.

Applications are due January 16th and candidates will be accepted on a rolling basis. Apply here!

Penn State Hillel’s LINK Program is a yearlong engagement initiative that pairs first year students (Linksters) with upperclassmen (Links). For a first year student, an upperclassman serves as a peer mentor, buddy, and link to all things Penn State. First year students who apply to be a Linkster will be matched with a Link based on the self-described interests and personality of the student. In addition to the peer mentorship component of LINK, monthly events will be held as a way to bring all LINK pairs together. Whether you’re looking for someone to attend a football game with or you are in need of a study buddy, LINK is a great way to meet new people!
