Words from Your Chapter President
While recently traveling and exploring new locations to fish, I found myself a few miles from Mount Airy, North Carolina. Having never been there, I decided I'd drop in and explore the town a little. In addition to being able to get a $4.00 pork chop sandwich, I was taken back to the time of my youth.
As many of you know, Andy Griffith was born in Mount Airy and The Andy Griffith show is based on this town. For those of you in the chapter that are too young to remember this show, google it or watch a few reruns on TV-Land--you'll get a good laugh.
Looking around Mount Airy I ran across the statue you see in this photo. Most of you will recognize Andy and Opie from the opening shot of each episode, whistling a tune carrying their fishing poles down a mountain lane. All this nostalgia and the statue of Andy with his fly rod and Opie with his fishing pole got me thinking...
The Christmas season will soon be upon us and as we all scramble to find the right gifts for our loved ones, things get hectic. So let's consider the writing on the stautue: “A simpler time, A quieter place, A lesson, A laugh, A father and A son."
When was the last time you took your son, daughter, grandchild, niece or nephew fishing? Or took some time alone to share a laugh, teach a lesson, share a quite time in nature? Trout Unlimited offers a chance for you to purchase a youth membership for that loved one this Christmas. Getting a young person a TU membership will provide them with lessons in conservation that will last a lifetime. Taking a young person fishing and teaching them to fly fish will instill fishing etiquette, scientific understanding of entomology, and stream hydraulics. You'll be their favorite uncle, grandparent, or a really cool dad.
Between now and the new year Bluegrass Trout Unlimited will be entering any new Facebook followers into a raffle to win a BGTU coffee mug. The goal is to reach 200 subscribers! We have 8 mugs, and we need 35 likes.
Thanks to all those who have sent in pictures for the new website. We can still use submissions from anyone who has photos, art, or video of Kentucky waterways, fish, and natural beauty. Please encourage folks to help us out.
Additionally, feel free to send us articles, newsletter submissions, or anything else you'd like others to see.
