Simplicity (17 - 19 Mar)
An elegiac response to the works of Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges, helmed by Guillermo Angelelli, this production was co-devised and performed by our final-year students. The Straits Times found “artistic complexity” in the work in an interview with director and student-actors, while TODAY called it “an ambitious intercultural work.”

Once more: visiting students from WAAPA
For the second year running, theatre students from WAAPA (Perth, Australia) visited ITI and participated in classes. This year, their visit culminated with the five joining ITI’s own Year 1s and 2s in a dramatic showing of their Kutiyattam training.

Scholarship News: reach out to ASEAN
A new ITI-Asia Scholarship supported by U.S. Embassy, Singapore was announced in March. This will make the school’s unique training available to a student from any of the 10 ASEAN Economic Community member states, with financial support at US$10,000 yearly. News site six-six.com notes U.S. Embassy Singapore Chargé d’Affaires Blair Hall’s statement that it was created to support “a diverse student body.”

Visitors from afar
We were glad that visiting artists took time out to visit ITI, speak with our students and us. This quarter, we said “hello” to Michele Guarado and Paola Raho (commedia dell’arte actors from Italy) and Mexican artists Bárbara Colio (playwright) Felipe Cervera (theatre-maker and academic).

At The Substation Town Hall Meeting
The first quarter of the year ended with ITI Director (and former Substation Artistic Director), T Sasitharan, moderating the Substation Town Hall Meeting (31 March) - a close to a series of conversations between new A.D. Alan Oei and over 100 arts practitioners on the arts space’s new vision. Follow The Substation on updates to this.

Board Member Tan Tarn How: on literature
Acclaimed playwright and ITI Board Member Tan Tarn How joined two other speakers in The Select Centre’s “Literally Speaking” series on 15 March, in an evening that queried why we need more literature in schools and more readers in society.

ITI 2017 Intake Auditions & Open Studio Day
Auditions for next year’s 12 spaces will see ITI reaching out to five cities in four months. For those in Singapore, mark your calendar for our Open Studio Day (23 July) to engage with students and faculty on campus. Find our audition dates here

Is there enough theatre training in Singapore? The value of intensive training in dance and music is unquestioned; so why is the same in theatre not equally recognised?  A forum for actors, those seeking training, others in theatre courses and teachers, join us in an our annual forum on 23 July (Saturday). Details to come here.

Alumni works across the world

The ITI alumni have kept busy as usual - as artistic director in the International Theatre Festival of Kerala, as theatre-maker in Hong Kong, directing shows in Philippines, Malaysia and India. In Singapore, our recent graduates took on roles in TheatreWorks’ Between Consciousness, The Theatre Practice’s Liao Zhai Rocks and SightLines Theatre’s Lord of the Flies.  
 

Supporting the Arts NMP nomination

ITI and our Director T Sasitharan (through ArtsEngage), supported the nomination of Kok Heng Leun for the Arts Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP) position. Heng Leun - artistic director of Drama Box and a member of ITI’s Examination Board - was officially appointed on 22 March.
