Social This Thursday!

For the first time since mid March, there will be a Social this Thursday, May 28, starting at 5:00pm!  Jerry Burnett and Lisa Hickman have volunteered to be Bar Hosts and will be serving wine, beer and common mixed drinks.

Contrary to a previous announcement, guests will be welcome.  Since this will be a sort of trial run, there will not be a dinner this week.  We will be providing individually wrapped snack items such as nuts, cheese, chips, etc.

There are obvious risks to meeting indoors for prolonged periods prior to a COVID-19 vaccine or treatment. The decision to attend is the responsibility of each individual attendee.  JYC assumes no liability for possible exposure and any resultant illness.

We will space tables at 6 or more feet apart and provide hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes.  If you are sick or you have a vulnerability, please stay home.  If you wish to wear face covering (which has been shown to lessen the likelihood of virus transmission) please feel free to do so.  Do not expect all attendees or hosts to be wearing face covering.

If weather conditions permit, we hope to use the deck.
Drink chips are $3.00 each or 4 for $10.00.

If you are not a Juneau Yacht Club member but are interested in joining the Club, please come to one of our Thursday evening Socials as a guest of a member or come and introduce yourself to any Board member. We will be glad to make you our guest, show you around and discuss the benefits of joining. Under our Club Liquor License, non-members are not allowed to purchase alcoholic beverages but your host may treat you and you are welcome to join us for dinner if a dinner is being served.
Juneau Yacht Club Finances
As you might expect, the Juneau Yacht Club finances have had a hit for the last few months with continuing expenses but no revenue.  The Board tries to keep some funds in reserve for emergency expenses so we are not in the red but our checking account is lower than desired.

The board is entertaining ideas for some fun fundraisers to build up our fund balance.  If you have ideas, please reply to this email and let the Board know what you are thinking.  Please watch for announcements of upcoming events in future editions of this newsletter. And, if you can, please participate in our fund raising activities.

Thank You Note from the Glory Hall

This note was sent to our club to thank us for allowing to use our kitchen at no cost during the early weeks of the pandemic when they needed to use a commercial kitchen to provide food for their clients.

Harbors "Tide Line" Newsletter

The City and Borough of Juneau Docks and Harbors Department has published their May newsletter.

NOTE:  There will be three open seats on the Docks and Harbors Board with interviews in June.  Please consider applying for a seat.  As a JYC member, your input would be valuable to the Board.

Commodore's Comment

Tom, Gus and I had a great eight day cruise on Piperia last week.  We made a clockwise lap around Admiralty.  Lots humpback and orca whales, sea otters and other wildlife.  The bears were a little shy; only saw two browns.  The weather was fantastic, only a short ruff spot coming out of Swanson Harbor but the rest was smooth running.  We had an impromptu JYC raft-up first night out at Taku Harbor.  We found S/V Morning Magic (Tom and Trish) at the main float and M/V Glacier Crews (Ken and Tanya) came in a little later. And yes, we did our “social distancing” thing.  Morning Magic tied up inside at the north end; Piperia inside at the south end and Glacier Crews took the outside middle. The next day, Piperia headed south, Glacier Crews headed north and Morning Magic stayed at the float waiting for friends to join them.  It was a little sparse for a real raft-up but we had some great conversations and at this point, I will take whatever I can get.  It looks like we are in for some nice spring weather so get on your boat, get out there and enjoy it.
