Skopje Marathon Cancellation

Skopje Marathon Race Director Kire Sinadinovski writes: “…The Wizz Air Skopje Marathon, to be held on 10 May 2015, was cancelled on the eve of the race. The City of Skopje and the Ministry of the Interior requested the race be cancelled at 23.00 on 9 May in response to an incident earlier that day in which eight policemen were killed in an anti-terrorist action in Kumanovo (a town 40km from Skopje).

"The City of Skopje and the Ministry of the Interior concluded that the safety of the 7500 participants in the Wizz Air Skopje Marathon, coming from 50 countries worldwide, was in danger, since the marathon was one of the targets of the terrorist group.

"As organizers we were shocked that the marathon had to be cancelled at the very last moment, but we had to accept the new situation and only feel sorry that runners did not get to run their race. However, the participants’ safety always comes first. We hope all participants and partners will understand the difficult situation in which we were placed.”

The Authentic Marathon

The Authentic MarathonMichel Bréal, father of the modern Olympic Marathon in 1896 could never have conceived how his creation would lead to an international movement with millions of adherents all over the world. Running the original Marathon, on the historic road from Marathon to the Panathenaic Stadium is a runner's lifelong dream. The Athens Marathon is uniquely appealing to all runners as the birthplace of the event.

THE AUTHENTIC ATHENS MARATHON: History and Great Moments 1896 to the Present is an aesthetically appealing publication (170 pages with extensive photographic and documentary material) written to inform and explain the unique appeal of this race. The Athens Marathon becomes colourfully alive in this book.

Tracking Offenders

The US company Road Race Management has created a listing of current and past road running and track and field athletes convicted of dope testing offenses. The comprehensive online section on the RRM website (www.rrm.com) contains separate lists of those currently serving suspensions (or who have announced their retirement from the sport) and a list of those who have completed suspensions and are actively competing again.

The historical list is the only place for race directors to identify previously banned runners if they have a policy of not inviting athletes to their events who have served a drug test ban in the past but are currently eligible.

The regularly-updated and sortable list details over 300 currently or formerly suspended athletes and contains all relevant specifics on the ban.

The new online tool is in a special section of the RRM Online Resources section of the RRM website, which also includes the Online Guide to Prize Money Races and Elite Athletes.  The Guide is a free resource that lists over 1000 athlete biographies and contacts and details on over 600 prize money races.
