#TeamWEY brings home the silverware

18 July 2021
Dear WKC

A fantastic turnout of Wey paddlers across many classifications of the National Marathon Championships in Reading, saw not only individual and crew success, but together gained the club a well deserved third place in the inter-club league table.  There really is racing for all in kayaking and we would encourage all our members to enter the numerous events that are starting to open up across our region and further afield. Keep a look out for race details here and on the club notice board.

Lots going on...

Saturday 24th July is the reopening of the Saturday kitchen - open from 11am - 1pm - Jim will be on the grill for his famous bacon butties.  It will be a cash system, until we can get the contactless system in place.

Don't forget to sign up for the Rounders in the Park, on Saturday 7th August. Open to all Wey families, bring a picnic and get to know some more friendly faces.

Summer Paddlesport Camps start from Monday 26th July, they are proving popular so if you know anyone who is thinking about signing up remind them before all the spaces go!  The camps will operate between 9.30 and 4pm and we remind members that there will be short periods when access to the changing rooms will be restricted, these will be clearly marked on the changing room doors.

Enjoy the water and sunshine!

What's on

Marathon Nationals, Reading 2021

The same weekend as one of our club members packed his red, white and blue vest and flew out to the Tokyo Olympics, many more of us, put on our yellow and blue stripes to compete in the 2021 National Marathon Championships held in Reading.

Singles on Saturday and doubles on Sunday made for some good racing, and I think it fair to say all Wey paddlers did a great job of getting back into racing.  Racing is something denied all of us and something we’ve missed for some 18 months. Our Chairman Jim Rossiter, sitting in his familiar chair on the bank, watched on with a knowing eye, he said “it’s so good to meet up with old friends from all over the country, and even better to see Wey with such a spread of paddlers across many of the classifications, perhaps we should aim to have a boat in every category by 2025!”

The great thing about marathon racing is whether you’re at the sharp end of the Open men’s or women’s class or like me in the over 59’s you have your own race with who ever is around you at the time, and there’s always a story to go around after the racing is over.

It’s always a risk in picking out any performances as you can’t mention everyone, and everyone did their best, interestingly in every classification a Wey boat was entered we always had a boat in the top 10. Of course there were some exceptional results, Lucas Clifford in the U12 K1, and later joined by William Roeser in the U12 K2,  Nerys Hall & Greta Roeser in the under 16 Girls k2, Arthur Morley in under 16 k1, Emma Watts & Karen Pflug in K2 (age group not to be disclosed) a special mention for Holly Attwood & Chole Ritchie under 16 k2 for a great effort only to robbed of finishing due to equipment failure.

Finally to those that took on the challenge of racing in the biggest start line the mixed k2, with Fay & Chris spearheading the TeamWEY challenge, closely pursued Jordan & Greta, Andras & Sam, Nerys & Arthur with five more Wey crews in their personal battles be it the bumpy conditions or other competitors – a great day at the office for Wey Kayak Club.

Reading CC did a great job in organising the event, over the weekend there were no problems, the weather was kind to us, we had a few issues beforehand with regard to entries, but as I understand it from our Chairman, that was more an issue with British Canoeing rather than Reading CC or indeed ourselves.

Next Marathon Race Southampton on the 25th July, be good to see you there.

The River Wey is under attack! by an invasive aquatic plant species the Floating Pennywort..and your help is needed to SPOT, REPORT and STOP IT.

The characteristic leaves and growth form help to make this plant easy to identify. it is already prevalent around Papercourt Lock and is spreading rapidly towards Send. First naturalised in 1990 as a result of discarded plants from garden ponds, it can grow up to 20cm per day and may quickly dominate a waterbody forming thick mats and impeding water flow and amenity use. May out-compete native species by blocking out light, causing deoxygenation, obstructing air breathing insects from reaching the water surface and reducing water temperatures.

SPOT IT: Fleshy stalks, Fine roots, a kidney shaped leaves with crinkled edges, up to 7cm wide, with leaves the are floating or emergent.

REPORT IT:  email:   or go to: Non-native species alert

STOP IT:  Remember to Check, Clean and Dry boats and equipment

Whats On....

We hope that all restrictions will be lifted from the club and country very soon, but in the meantime there is still plenty going on in and around the club.

Get Involved

It's our club, let's do it together

As we all know the Club has the advantage of a substantial Club house and grounds  which, whilst it is shared by others, we do need to play our part in helping to maintain and improve these facilities.
To help achieve this we are looking for Members who could act as Leaders in coordinating small working parties in the following areas
1 Repair and maintenance of the Club sheds.
2 Maintenance of all general areas to the rear of the building
3 Ensuring the showers and changing rooms are fully effective
4 Trees shrubs and grass in our specific compound
5 General  tidy “gardening” from the river to the Club house
6 Keeping the open areas free from litter and safe to use.
The ideas are to have a lead volunteer  who can be responsible for these specific sections and encourage others to assist plus report any situations that may require “professional contractors”  which can then provide costings for funding approval.
If you feel you can assist please contact Dave Kitching and we can work out the best way forward to suit everyone’s availability and skills.
