Parent Paddlers join our Family
3 October 2021

Dear WKC

We saw the first signs of Autumn at the club this week, with misty mornings and cooler temperatures.  As we shift season it's important to remember to dress for the conditions, and now is a good time to prepare by adding items to shopping baskets or Christmas wish lists.  Check out our Winter Kit Guide.

Autumn darker nights also mean that the weekday evening club training programme is adjusting to more land based with a mixture of gym, running, circuits and swim available for members to access.  Details of the programme will be released on Team App (Documents) each week.  The first document available is the Swim Programme (week 1), which can be used to to elevate your winter cross training and build stamina.

Cross training of another form saw a group of fearless members, try their hand rolling - plastic boats, in the warm waters of Lord Wandsworth College. There are a few places left on the Friday evening short course. Find out more below. There was more learning on Saturday with the second of our Parent/Carer Taster Session, laughter and fun had by all.  Many thanks to all the coaches and organisers involved who so generously give their time and skills to share their passion for paddlesport with new and old members.

Last Sunday saw a fantastic turn out for the Elmbridge Hasler, kicking off the London & South East region race schedule. Read more about the great paddling and the podium T-shirts brought home to Wey. Next Saturday sees the Paddling Challenge at Royal CC, don't forget to sign up as entries close at midnight tomorrow.

Our very own Hare & Hounds series will commence from the 31st October, keep a look out for messages from Jim, club Chairman to find out how you can Get Involved, whether it's baking cakes, marshalling or timing. There really is a job for everyone!

In the meantime we are in desperate need of Thursday & Saturday kitchen helpers - sign up on the sheet by the kitchen/ sign up on the duty roster on Team App (events) or email club chairman Jim (Saturday) or comms@weykayak.co.uk (Thursdays).

Surrey Hills and Rivers will be running Paddlesport Camps over the autumn half term weeks, please feel free to pass on their details to friends and family who might be interested.

Of interest to our younger family groups may be an alternate to fireworks lights, Sensory Glow Event to be held at Guildford Waterside Centre (our clubhouse) on 27th Oct from 6.30pm

As we move towards autumn and winter, the pace should slow slightly and we will be looking for different stories focusing on club/ member based activity, whether it is an interesting training session or group paddle or a historical memory of the club. If there is anything you would like us to focus on, get in touch. All contributions to the newsletter are appreciated. Keep your photos and stories coming to comms@weykayak.co.uk

Enjoy the water and daylight while it lasts!!

What’s on?

Elmbridge Hasler

The first of our in region Hasler Races, not only saw beautiful sunshine, but a wonderful turn out of over 180 paddlers on the day.

The first half of the day, saw Lucy H and Eira S in U14 Div A comfortable in the middle of a very large field, as was Delilah W in Div 9.  Owen A gave a solid performance in a strong field in Div 8, whilst Carol R was the leading veteran lady in Div 7. William E, paddling up to Div 7 from Div 9, took a convincing second place and was awarded with a promotion and a Elmbridge T shirt.

After a fine BBQ lunch, Div 5 saw a clutch of adult Wey paddlers holding the middle of the pack, including Colin W, Neil T and Peter G. Sam B showed great strategic thinking throughout his race, finishing a confident sixth, closely followed by Honor L in tenth, after Nerys H left a part of her boat on the rollers.

All our crew boats finished in the top three places , with Chloe R and Danny S just pipped at the post into third place in Div 6; Steve S and Calum S, second in Div 5; and the determined pairing of Felix S and Edward S hot on the wash of Sophie and Paul T, coming in third and first respectively.

Training with the senior group is paying dividends for Arthur M, coming in second, just 9 seconds behind the leading paddler in Div 3 and on a par with  Andras K in Div 2. Shout out to David H-J paddling 12 miles in Div 3 for the first time, he persevered and kept smiling throughout.

More photos on the event can be found on Team App (Gallery)

Many thanks to the organisers at Elmbridge CC for another great day

2021  - WINTER
SWIM PROGRAMME

The Programme is broken into three different programmes,
  1. HARD - -
  2. MEDIUM –
  3. EASY -
  • The HARD programme is designed for a 50m pool as the Surry Sports ParkThe MEDIUM and EASY programme is designed for use in the Spectrum Pool with its 25 m pool.
  • Obviously – this is a guideline only, and there will be cross overs till you find a group / program that you can work within
  • The program is designed to add approximately 50 m per session, stretching you gradually and building endurance, so stick to the program
  • A pullbuoy, goggles and water bottle are necessary for each session
  • Without using the pullbuoy, the session will feel overwhelming – the pullbouy is designed to get your body into the correct position in the water and enable you to work your arms. The kicking is separate enabling you to concentrate on kicking as it is often left overlooked !
  • There are THREE very different speeds to training and you NEED to work on them
  1. WARM UP & COOL DOWN – is done very slowly, elongating stroke, focusing on getting body into correct alignment, stretch out each stroke.
  2. PACE – is a constant speed, 70 % of what you can do, kicking constantly at 4 kicks per stoke, breathing every 4th stroke.
  3. SPRINT- is at 100% of your ability – arm pace doesn’t change- BUT pull under the water changes and kicking goes to 6 kicks per stroke.
  • For the Kicking in the program, just use the pullbouy and hold it with two arms out in front.
A kickboard is not necessary.
  • If there is anything you don’t understand or need help with please ask your Group Lead.
  • The aim is enjoyment, no injuries, endurance, fitness .
