Wey flying at Falcon
5 September 2021

Dear WKC

We are truly grateful to all the members, parents and others who volunteer both on and off the water.  As a member of the club, we hope that you will embrace the club's ethos by donating your time, skills and talents to help.  This week's edition looks for support across the club, including supporting the upcoming Junior Fun Regatta, Thursday and Saturday Club Kitchen and the upcoming Floating Pennywort Removal day vital to the ongoing health of our stretch of water.

Whilst we await the results, reports and photos of #TeamWay at the MacGregor Paddle in Nottingham, read about Wey's antics at the Falcon Oxford Marathon.

This week we send our best wishes to juniors, Greta R and Nerys H who are off to the Olympic Hopes Regatta this week, and we look forward to welcoming back Honor L who has been competing at the Junior World Championships in Portugal. Well done ladies!

Despite the return to school, Amanda will continue to run the Junior Tuesday beginner and improver sessions 4.00 - 5.30pm this week (7th Sept), to gauge interest/practicalities in their continuation. Please make it if you can!

All contributions to the newsletter are appreciated. Keep your photos and stories coming to comms@weykayak.co.uk

Enjoy the water!!

Falcon Marathon Report

With the August bank holiday gifting us a long weekend, many of our paddlers used the opportunity to head up to Oxford to race at the Falcon Hasler Race on the River Thames. Traditionally a bumpy race in places, our paddlers did extremely well and even earned some more podium places and promotions.

In the 12 mile races (Division 1 to Division 3), Greta R took to the water with her World Championships K2 partner, Klara J, to compete in Div3 K2, producing a confident 1st place and a performance they were both very happy with. Duncan R also showed a strong performance in Div3 K1, earning a 4th place after battling it out in a big group most of the way round.

In the 8 mile races (Division 4 to Division 6), Hannah G had a tough race in a very big field for Div4 K1 but she worked hard to move her way through the field as the water calmed down, finishing in 25th place. Felix S had another great Div5 K1 race to finish 3rd and Will R had a great debut in Div6 K1 to finish 8th. Sophie T and Paul T took out a father, daughter K2 to have a dominate race in Div4 K2, finishing in 1st and 2 minutes ahead of the rest of the field. Pete G and Holly M finished 7th in Div5 K2, after a competitive start.

Chloe R demonstrated that her hard summer of training is paying off with a 1st place in Div8 K1 and a double promotion up to  Div6. Her sister, Izzy R, also did well in the newly established Geoff Saunders series of U14’s with a 2nd place in the A category.

Well done to everyone who raced and many thanks to Falcon Rowing and Canoeing Club for hosting a fantastic event!

Club night, or Saturday bacon butties would not be possible without our amazing volunteers.  It is a great way to contribute back to the club, whilst getting to know more members (in a dry and warm setting!).  We have volunteers for the next two weeks - if no one comes forward there will be no dinner!

If anyone (paddler or parent) would be willing to help in the club kitchens on either a Saturday morning 11am -1pm or Thursday evening please sign up via TeamApp -go to Event - select a date and then press on the person icon (duty roster) and assign yourself to the main or pudding!    To find out more, or sign up if you are not yet on Team App, pop us an email at comms@weykayak.co.uk.

Junior Fun Regatta

We look forward to seeing you all, juniors and parents, next Saturday (11th Sept.) for the Fun Mini Regatta. This will replace the regular Saturday AM session and will continue into the afternoon. Please arrive at 9.30am to register and set up a boat, it could be busy so come early to get your first choice of boat for the time trial. Please bring at least one spare set of paddling kit and some warm clothes to change into. On the day we will require some helpers, please let us know if you are able to volunteer.

If you haven’t already signed up for the day then please do so at weysprints@weykayak.co.uk and give your child’s name and date of birth (this will help us in the organisation).

Thank you. Kaye Smith

The JDS training days are aimed at junior paddlers (up to U19 for 2021) who are looking to develop their flatwater racing skills. The training days will offer paddlers the opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people and paddle in new waters.

The eligibility criteria is as follows:

Girls - Girls C or above (Sprint Division) and/or Div 5 marathon or above for U16's / Div 4 marathon or above for U19's

Boys - Boys C or above (Sprint Divisions) and/or Div 4 marathon or above for U16's or Div 3 marathon or above for U19's

The JDS is also aimed at coaches seeking to develop their knowledge and engage with like-minded coaches. Coaches can be from clubs with paddlers in attendance, or from clubs which don't, what's key though is a desire to learn, engage and share ideas.

£10 charge for the day
