National Sprint Success

11 July 2021
Dear WKC

#TeamWEY have been flashing their stripes across the country again.  Last weekend saw a mixed group attend the National Sprint Championships in Nottingham, and this weekend many more have been racing at the National Marathon Championships in Reading.  Huge congratulations to all those entering, whether it was your first or twenty first time. We can proudly say that we have a number of National Champions and medalists, as well as a number of our juniors selected to represent GB at upcoming international events. The sprint race report is below and we will save the marathon one for next edition so we get all medals and photos!

The last of the primary schools groups finish their introductory courses this week.  Over 300 children have been able enjoy the great outdoors and experience kayaking with us in recent weeks and we look forward to welcoming many more during the summer paddle camps.  Our thanks go to Amanda Childerstone for coordinating the school programme as well as numerous helpers on the courses including amongst others Arthur, Kaye, Nerys, Ben, Honor, Cat and Perry.

As more restrictions are lifted we look forward to restarting more of the social aspects of the club.  Whether you spent lock down mastering haute cuisine, bacon butties or just banana bread show your talents would be warmly welcomed in the Saturday or Thursday night kitchen, look out for the sign up sheets. In addition, the junior section will be hosting Family Rounders in the Park on 7th August, for further details read on.

Up keep of the club is an ongoing volunteer led task. During lock down numerous updates and improvements have been made to the gym, changing rooms and more recently the upstairs windows in the paddle machine room have become automatic to aid ventilation. Next Thursday,15th July, the changing rooms will see further works so access will be restricted during the day. See details of how you could Get Involved and keep our club in tip top condition, whether its regular grass cutting or minor maintenance.

Enjoy the water!

Sprint Nationals 2021

Sunshine and showers greeted the paddlers at the 2021 Open & British National Masters, Seniors, Under 23 and Junior Championship Regatta, in Nottingham.  As well winning national medals and titles, a number of our paddlers secured GB selection at upcoming internationals events.

Age is not a limit in kayaking and the Masters lead the way, with determined individual and crew performances. The crew boat of Dave Battershell, Pete Gorman, Dave Martyn and Millar (EXE) placed 4th, which was then matched by Dave Martyn and Duncan Roeser in the K2 500m, Dave Martyn in the K1 500m and Donal McIntyre in the K1 200m in his debut at Nottingham.  Pete Gorman came away Gold and Silver medals in the Masters O64 K1 200m and 500m respectively.

In the seniors/U23,  Andras Kovacs and Tom Holland were active throughout the weekend with a highlight being a bronze in the K2 200m.  Lifelong friends through kayaking Sam Martyn and Sophie Thompson reunited to gain a closely fought 4th and 5th K2 200m and K2 500mm as well as a bronze in the K4.  Newly enlisted member Abi Burgess secured a silver with a mixed K4 and fifth in the K1 500m. Jordan Martyn's paddlesport instructor skills were put to good on the safety boats helping a novice paddler with their nerves.

In the Junior section,  Dan Price in the Boys U18 won a bronze in the K2 1000m and Silver with a mixed K4 crew, with strong performances in many of his individual  heats and finals.  Arthur Morley secured F1 places in all his Boys U16 K1 races, winning bronze in the 1000m final.   #WeyGirlPower was in full force. Girls U16 Greta Roeser claimed an incredible hatrick of individual national titles (200m, 500m and 1000m), with Nerys Hall hot on her tail winning a bronze in the K1 500m.  As combined force they secured gold in the K2 500m and silver in the U18/U16 K4.  Honor Lewis, in her first year of Girls U18, secured F1 places for all her individual events, gold as part of the U18 K4 crew boat and bronze medals in both the K2 200m and K2 500m as well as promotion to Girls A.

As a result of these great performances, Honor Lewis has been selected to race for GB at the Junior World Sprint  Championships in the K4 500m whilst Greta Roeser and Nerys Hall have been selected to represent GB at The Olympic Hopes Regatta in Racice Czech Republic. In addition Dan Price was selected as a reserve for the K4 500m race at the Junior World Championships.  Good luck!

The River Wey is under attack! by an invasive aquatic plant species the Floating Pennywort..and your help is needed to SPOT, REPORT and STOP IT.

The characteristic leaves and growth form help to make this plant easy to identify. it is already prevalent around Papercourt Lock and is spreading rapidly towards Send. First naturalised in 1990 as a result of discarded plants from garden ponds, it an grow up to 20cm per day and may quickly dominate a waterbody forming thick mats and impeding water flow and amenity use. May out-compete native species by blocking out light, causing deoxygenation, obstructing air breathing insects from reaching the water surface and reducing water temperatures.

SPOT IT: Fleshy stalks, Fine roots, a kidney shaped leaves with crinkled edges, up to 7cm wide, with leaves the are floating or emergent.

REPORT IT:  email: alert_nonnative@ceh.ac.uk   or go to: Non-native species alert

STOP IT:  Remember to Check, Clean and Dry boats and equipment

Club pathway and coaching groups

The structure aims to:
  • Support each member meet their full potential and achieve their aspirations
  • Create clear progression for paddlers throughout the club
  • Help adult members identify groups they may be interested to join/connect with for (*) coach and self-led sessions.
For ease, the groups are loosely based on marathon divisions/Hare and Hounds times. Progress through the junior groups will be overseen by the coaches in agreement with parents and paddlers and closely supported to ensure a smooth transition.  Once junior paddlers have progressed to Div 4 (Performance onwards) they will train with adult paddlers for a portion of their sessions, learning from many former international paddlers who are keen to pass on their knowledge and experience.

Each group has a Group Lead, this person will be the main contact for paddlers/parents on all training, coaching and club session timing questions. These group leads will be supported by coaches and PAAs, a programme writer (Paul Dimmock) and technical coach (Peter Gorman).

More information on each group including, contact details, group aims and training times can be found on the club notice board and TeamApp (for juniors).

Get Involved

Its our club, lets do it together

As we all know the Club has the advantage of a substantial Club house and grounds  which, whilst it is shared by others, we do need to play our part in helping to maintain and improve these facilities.

To help achieve this we are looking for Members who could act as Leaders in coordinating small working parties in the following areas

1 Repair and maintenance of the Club sheds.
2 Maintenance of all general areas to the rear of the building
3 Ensuring the showers and changing rooms are fully effective
4 Trees shrubs and grass in our specific compound
5 General  tidy “gardening” from the river to the Club house
6 Keeping the open areas free from litter and safe to use.

The ideas are to have a lead volunteer  who can be responsible for these specific sections and encourage others to assist plus report any situations that may require “professional contractors”  which can then provide costings for funding approval.

If you feel you can assist please contact Dave Kitching and we can work out the best way forward to suit everyone’s availability and skills.
