Fibrocystic Breast Condition
Between 50% and 60% of women of menstruating age will have fibrocystic breast condition at some time.  This condition involves fibrous (firm and rubbery) and cystic breasts (fluid-filled sacs).  Symptoms of this condition may include: tingling, lumps, pain, itching, swelling, and tenderness.

Thermography followed by an ultrasound is recommended for women with fibrocystic breast condition for both risk assessment and as a treatment monitoring.

Ultrasound is good at differentiating between fluid-filled cysts and dense mass.  The downside to ultrasounds is
that
it
may
not distinguish between normal and abnormal tissue
, so may not pick up micro-calcifications that a mammogram will.

Fibrocystic breasts are usually treated by needle aspiration; however, this does not address the underlying cause of the cysts and nodules.  Both fibrous and cystic breasts react to hormonal changes and the treatment of fibrocystic con

dition should involve balancing the hormones.
Indole-3-Carbinol(I-3-C) is an over-the-counter supplement made from cruciferous vegetables, shown to be very effective in treating fibrocystic symptoms within a few months of use.
Ultimately, addressing the cause
s
of the

imbalance needs to be part of the long-term
solution.

It is recommended than women with fibrocystic conditions avoid all caffeinated drinks including tea and coffee, chocolate, and soft drinks as caffeine will make it worse.  It is also recommended that women with fibrocystic condition stick to an anti-estrogenic diet that includes quality vitamins including magnesium and zinc.  In addition to balancing hormones, it is also recommended that women with fibrocystic condition keep their immune system well, get adequate sleep, manage stress, exercise, and maintain a positive attitude.
