LEXICAL GAP Issue No. 1

I was in the Room Where It Happens!

July felt like half a month. Where did it go? Oh right, it got lost in the haze that was Hamilton.

Yes, I went to go see Hamilton. July is my birthday month, and as a gift to myself, I bought myself tickets...8 months ago...using Christmas present money. I've been dying to see it since I first heard the cast album back in September. I only just missed seeing Lin-Manuel Miranda, Philippa Soo, and Leslie Odom, Jr. in the title roles (they left on my birthday, how dare they!), but I got to see nearly everyone else in the original cast, including and especially Daveed Diggs (hnnnnngh) as the Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson. It is every bit as excellent as people say it is, and more. I still have a Hamilton hangover.

In addition to Hamilton, I went to New York to catch up with friends and family. I still think of New York as home; I spent my teens and the entirety of my twenties there, and it's as much part of my DNA as my hometown of Los Angeles. I miss it terribly; it's only circumstance and not choice that's the reason I'm not still there, so I hope to move back someday.

Lexical Gap: Treppenwitz

This month's word is a bit of a two-fer. The German word Treppenwitz actually comes from the French l'esprit de l'escalier (lit. "the spirit of the staircase"), or "staircase wit." It refers to the perfect comeback or witty retort that comes to you...after the moment has passed. Luckily, being a writer means that your characters never have to suffer from it!

In this issue:

1. LEXICAL GAP: Treppenwitz
2. BEHIND THE SCENES OF WINTERSONG: GALLEYS ARE HERE
3. GIVEAWAY: Wintersong galley + annotations (with bonus "unadulerated" scenes!)

Not only did I see friends and family in New York, I also had dinner with my editor and SHE GAVE ME A GALLEY OF WINTERSONG. Yes, my friends, this means that ARCs are now ready. o_O My publisher is still sorting through requests and a blogger mailing will take place in October, but in the mean time...

GET A SNEAK PEAK OF THE FIRST 3 CHAPTERS HERE!

Unfortunately, we have many more requests for ARCs than we have actual copies,* my publisher has generously made the first 3 chapters available on the Griffin Teen website for everyone to read!
