LEXICAL GAP Issue No. 8

#deadlinedespair

The headline says it all, really. Right now, I am in the middle of drafting book 2, which is due back to my editor in October. I am nowhere near where I need to be in terms of story and word count to get it done by the deadline. Part of that is my fault; it took me a while to get started on this because I didn't know what the emotional journey for my protagonist was until fairly late, and I can't start writing until that has crystalized for me. The other part is also somewhat my fault in that I am overcommitted to a bazillion different other projects, including the PubCrawl and Earth Kingdom Radio podcasts, but also because I work a full-time job.

Between blogging for two different websites, recording and editing two different podcasts, doing promo work for Wintersong (stay tuned for some announcements about swag!), and drafting book 2, I have been busy, busy, busy. I look forward to having a life again in the fall, but until then it's going be a long, hard stretch of iced coffee, Twizzlers, and little sleep.

Lexical Gap: Sehnsucht

This month's lexical gap is truly one of those words that does not have a direct English equivalent, or even an equivalent English concept. Sehnsucht (from the German) can be translated as "a feeling of intense longing or yearning" but much of it also compasses the notion of missing something. In this way, it was somewhat similar to the Portuguese word saudade, which can be translated as "a homesickness for the love that lingers after it is gone." The closest word we have in English to describe this emotional state is perhaps "nostalgia," but Sehnsucht is not limited to the past, or even what you personally have known or experienced. Maybe the actual closest word we have to this feeling is "the blues" as expressed in African-American music, its sound and deep emotional history.

BEHIND THE SCENES OF WINTERSONG

ICYMI: I wrote a post about how to recreate Jareth's Goblin King makeup look from Labyrinth! ...sort of. I love makeup, but I am a terrible teacher. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anyway, if any of you attempt this look, I would love to see it! Email me pictures, tag me on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or Tumblr!

Or if you're able to provide a better tutorial, BY ALL MEANS LET ME KNOW.

GIVEAWAY WINNER!

And the winner of last month's giveaway of an annotated galley of Wintersong, as well as the bonus unadulterated scenes, is:

Becky V.!

I will be emailing you later today about an address to send the ARC. Congrats!

SWEEPSTAKES GIVEAWAY!

My publisher is hosting a galley giveaway of Wintersong! They are giving away 5 COPIES, so if you didn't win my giveaway, you still have another chance to win an ARC!

They also made me this graphic to share with y'all. Over the next few months I'll be sharing a few more; each image has another quote from Wintersong. Share it or save it!
