PFLAG Sturgeon Bay/Door County: Same Organization, Different Venue
In 1997, Hope Church welcomed the newly established PFLAG of Door County for its monthly meetings, the only church at that time willing to provide a venue for our fledgling organization. PFLAG members genuinely acknowledge the support the Hope Church community has provided to our organization for more than two decades. A sincere thank you, Hope Church, for embracing our organization with a safe and welcoming embrace. PFLAG and Hope Church will continue to partner on activities and events.
Beginning this month, November, Door County Library, located at 107 South 4th Avenue, will host our monthly meetings.
For many years, PFLAG members debated what would provide the most engaging venue for our monthly meetings. That debate included the belief that there are individuals who might benefit from PFLAG who may choose not to attend simply because the meetings were held at a church. Conversely, the debate also included the belief that teens, for example, not to mention adults, might find a public building more comfortable in which to attend PFLAG meetings. The public routinely enter and leave the library without distinction or possible stigma.
The change of venue necessitates changing our meeting day--the 3rd Tuesday of each month--and a new time--6:00 p.m. The next meeting, then, will be Tuesday, November 19 at 6:00 p.m., at the Sturgeon Bay Public Library.
We hope to see you on 11-19-19 at 6 p.m. at our new venue on 4th Avenue.
LGBTQ community says Door County more accepting
Posted about three weeks ago by Terry Kovarik
Beth Mitchell says from the time she came out as transgender in 2011 and lost her job as a substitute teacher Door County has become more accepting of LGBTQ residents and visitors. Mitchell is the newly elected President of the Door County chapter of PFLAG, Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. She says PFLAG has worked to help people understand that members of the LGBTQ community share the same goals and daily challenges as straight individuals. Mitchell says efforts like the “We Welcome All” campaign with area businesses and other organizations have also helped change local attitudes, and other organizations, like Open Door Pride for the last 3 years, have also helped change local attitudes.
Mitchell also credits faith-based communities, such as Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Door County in Sister Bay and Hope Church in Sturgeon Bay, with helping change attitudes by opening their doors to LGBTQ members.

UWGB is performing Rocky Horror Picture Show
Cast members say it’s going to be an electric show. Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show is a cult classic.
“Sweethearts Brad and Janet, stuck with a flat tire during a storm, discover the eerie mansion of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a transvestite scientist. As their innocence is lost, Brad and Janet meet a houseful of wild characters, including a rocking biker and a creepy butler. Through elaborate dances and rock songs, Frank-N-Furter unveils his latest creation: a muscular man named “Rocky.” “A socko wacko weirdo rock concert.”
You can see Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show on the Green Bay Campus, Nov. 21-23, 2019 7:30 p.m. and a special late-night show, Friday, Nov. 22 11 p.m. Tickets on sale now.

UWGB Campus Cupboard and Closet
The UWGB Campus Cupboard and Closet is a service that provides food, cleaning, clothing, kitchen and some household items to students who need a little support to help them as they complete their educational goals, or to not take on a second or third job so they can focus on their studies. An average of 45 students use the Cupboard each semester. Some of the students have unusual expenses in which they need support one time, others have limited or no family support and need food, cleaning or school supplies because they have $5 left in their savings after buying gasoline or bus tickets to get to work. Each story is different, but the need is present. https://www.uwgb.edu/cupboard/items-needed/
