Register to Vote Challenge to Students

This year’s theme for Day of Silence is Shaping Our Future. If you are not already you can take a pledge to register and challenge others to commit to voting! 4 in 5 LGBTQ students don’t see positive LGBTQ representation in their curriculum, 8 in 10 experience anti-LGBTQ verbal harassment, and over a third miss school for feeling unsafe or uncomfortable. We can change that by exercising your right to vote and make a difference in your local, state, and federal policies to protect and include LGBTQ students!

Pride Leadership Camps

The Pride Leadership camps will not be overnight on campus this summer, but they will be online. The good news is that we have enough La Force Foundation scholarship money that attending camp will be free for the first 20 campers to enroll in the Middle School Camp, and the first 20 for High School Camp!. The challenge is that attendees will need access to wifi and tablets/laptops/computers. If you know a student who does not have access, but wants to enroll, please have them contact me at christis@uwgb.edu. Information about Middle School and High School camp is here:  https://www.uwgb.edu/camps/

From National:  It’s 2020 Census Time: We Must be Counted

"It’s Census time, and with stay-at-home orders in place for the majority of the country, there’s no better time to take five minutes to participate. The LGBTQ+ community is one of the hardest-to-count populations, and members of the community who belong to multiple hard-to-count populations--people with disabilities, people experiencing homelessness, immigrants, people of color, renters, and low-income people--are particularly vulnerable to being undercounted. With so much at stake, including funding for SNAP, Medicare/Medicaid, public housing and education, and more, filling out the Census 2020 is truly critical to the health and wellbeing of our LGBTQ+ loved ones and their families. Remember, The Census Bureau is bound by law to protect your answers and keep them strictly confidential."   Also, since one cannot skip the gender binary question online, know that you can complete it over the phone or request a paper copy.

Survey on Community Connections and COVID-19

Hello,

We are Dr. Diane Illig, a Sociologist, and Dr. Michele Schlehofer, a Psychologist, and we are conducting a study to explore how LGBTQ+ people are responding to the Coronavirus pandemic. Specifically, we’re exploring the various ways the pandemic is impacting LGBTQ+ people’s sense of community connection, the ways in which people are remaining connected, and the impact different community connections have on people’s wellbeing. We are hoping your PFLAG Chapter could help us by passing along this online survey to people in your networks.

The survey can be found at: https://salisbury.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_78mF8O0MWr46WUZ

Questions can be directed to us at mmschlehofer@salisbury.edu or dsillig@salisbury.edu. If you have any adverse effects or concerns about the research, please contact the primary investigator (provide contact information) or the Office of Graduate Studies and Research at Salisbury University at 410-548-3549 or toll free 1-888-543- 0148.  This research is approved by the Salisbury University’s IRB under protocol number 29.

Thank you,
Michele and Diane

UWGB Campus Cupboard and Closet

The UWGB Campus Cupboard and Closet is a service that provides food, cleaning, clothing, kitchen and some household items to students who need a little support to help them as they complete their educational goals, or to not take on a second or third job so they can focus on their studies. An average of 45 students use the Cupboard each semester. Some of the students have unusual expenses in which they need support one time, others have limited or no family support and need food, cleaning or school supplies because they have $5 left in their savings after buying gasoline or bus tickets to get to work. Each story is different, but the need is present. https://www.uwgb.edu/cupboard/items-needed/
