Dear Friends:
Spring air -
Woven moon
and Plum scent

Basho (ca. 1680)

As the song says; "spring is here" - finally!  After what felt like an eternal winter it is finally warm and blue skies.  The Village is alive today - throngs of people on the street like a carnival, joyful in their short sleeves and skirts.  Playful and walking about, exploring and finding.  Smalls and Mezzrow were burgeoning this weekend with lines around the corner, full of people seeking and loving jazz music.  At Smalls we had Eric Alexander and Joe Farnsworth setting the stage on fire.  It was exciting.  I look forward to the summer and sitting there in front of the club greeting folks, answering their questions and wishing them well as they descend into our magical basement clubs to experience a taste of life and vitality.

I'm getting excited about a project that has taken us nearly three years now to complete - the SmallsLIVE Revenue Sharing project.  We are about to launch our new website from which will will make public our entire audio/video library, which extends back to September of 2007.  At this writing we have more than 9000 recordings and represent more than 1000 artists.  Revenue that we collect from subscriptions will be pooled and distributed directly to the artists based on how much they get listened to.  The more popular an artist the bigger their share.  This revenue sharing system may be unique and makes each artist a partner with SmallsLIVE.  Each week we will add new shows, so that if there is a show you wanted to see and missed you will be able to watch it at your leisure in the archive.

We are still working on pricing points and finishing up the site but we hope to have it launched by the summer.  We would be interested in hearing from fans what they think is an appropriate monthly fee for unlimited streaming access to our audio/video archive.  We stress that subscribers will be members who's subscriptions are directly supporting the artists and the club.  What are your thoughts?

I wish everyone the best and hope to see you at Smalls and Mezzrow!

NOW: A cover paid at Mezzrow also gets you admission to Smalls.
