SmallsLIVE Newsletter & Schedule

March 3rd, 2014

Hello Friends:

I was recently asked to participate in a panel discussion on the question "is there still a vibrant jazz scene?" The organizer called me in advance to see what my position was.  She cited a classic incident where (supposedly) Max Roach slugged Ornette Coleman over "stylistic differences" when Ornette first came to town.  My response was, "Yes!  Of course there's still a vibrant jazz scene!  In fact, I personally witnessed one musician (who I will not name) slugging another over "stylistic difference" - not that I condone that kind of behavior, but I do appreciate the passionate gesture...

What I'm seeing is not only a vibrant jazz scene but a thriving one.  Smalls has always been a nexus of jazz activity and is, in fact, several "scenes" happening simultaneously.  There's an enormous interchange of ideas, meetings of minds and occasionally clashes.  But I do feel that there is a large body of extremely talented musicians working very hard on moving this music forward - and it's happening right before our ears.  Each night at Smalls has a different flavor depending on the band and the clique that is associated with that group of musicians.  Often these scenes overlap.  There is also overlap with other clubs such as The Zinc Bar, The 55 Bar, Fat Cat and Smoke - all of which contribute to the culture of this music in New York.

What I find fascinating is the "virtual scene" that is now manifest via the internet.  On Facebook, there is now a group called "Jam Of The Week" where musicians are invited to video themselves playing one chorus of whatever tune happens to be the jam that week - "All The Things You Are", "Well You Needn't" and the chord changes of "I've Got Rhythm" have all gotten hundreds of submissions from musicians all over the world.  People can, of course, "like" the video or leave a comment.  So far it's been fairly PC with very supportive and nice commentary but it's starting to get more critical, which is really healthy.  I'm really amazed at how many musicians participate.  It's also really a challenge to record just one chorus and then listen to it.  It's like a jazz "haiku" but the environment will foster growth.  An enormous world-wide jazz scene connected from the internet.  This is why Smalls is so committed to live streaming and archiving.  We reach all the scenes all over the world and in this way jazz will live and grow.

Other News:

My hat's off, once again, to my friend Cory Weeds who's club "The Cellar" in Vancouver, has finally closed its doors.  Cory, my brother, thanks for your hard work.  I know you'll be back with something new and great.  We look forward to seeing you in the Big Apple.

This Week At Smalls:

This Monday we present a piano trio double-header from two formidable modernists.  Uri Caine starts the evening at 7:30 PM with his trio that features Mark Helias on bass and Clarence Penn on drums.  At 10 PM we bring back Jean-Michel Pilc who's coming in with the legendary Richard Bona on bass and Obed Calvaire on drums.  This should be 4 sets of fascinating and satisfying piano trio.

Tuesday at 7:30 PM,  I will be honored to be playing with the legendary drummer Eliot Zigmund.  Also joining me is tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana (winner of the Thelonious Monk Competition) and Pablo Menares on bass.  At 10:30 PM is the amazing Smalls Legacy Band under the direction of "force of nature" Frank Lacy on trombone and a stellar group of KILLING musicians.

Wednesday and Thursday:  I am psyched to bring in one of our most popular artists - guitarist Peter Bernstein, who will be coming in for two nights at 9:30 PM with a high-level quartet that features Sam Yahel on piano, Doug Weiss on bass and the truly amazing Bill Stewart on drums.  There will be two sets - 9:30 PM and 11:00 PM  - the house will be turned between sets so plan accordingly.  It will be packed.  Be sure to check out our "Round Midnight" concert on Wednesday which showcases the young tenor player Jon Beshay and his quartet with Mike King on piano, George Delancey on bass and Kevin Kanner on drums.

Friday and Saturday we are two another double header, this time with amazing tenor saxophonist.  At 7:30 PM we present The New York Standards Quartet which features Tim Armacost on tenor, David Berkman on piano, Ugonna Okegwo on bass and Gene Jackson on drums.  This group plays two sets until about 10PM.  We will be turning the house after this show.  At 10:30 PM we present Rob Scheps and his "Core-tet" which features the wonderful Jim O'Connor on trumpet, Jaime Reynolds on piano, Cameron Brown on bass and the sprightly Anthony Pinciotti on drums.

Sunday we have a great matinee show at 4:30 PM featuring Peter and Will Anderson and their Octet.  This is a truly terrific, swinging band with a great book of arrangements.  It's a nice slot for a concert so come on out this Sunday afternoon.  Our "Round Midnight" concert features the popular and beloved Joe Magnarelli and his quartet with Anthony Wonsey on piano, Mike Karn on bass and the legendary Victor Lewis on drums.

All for all, as good a week at Smalls as you could hope to have - a s always, we urge you to be compassionate to the other humans an animals that we share this planet with.  I look forward to seeing all of you at the club.

Best Regards,

Spike Wilner
