Hello Friends:

To me, the title "club owner" has negative connotations.  Generally, it seems associated with some greedy-type character that takes advantage of poor musicians who slave away for pennies while he gets rich.  In defense of JAZZ club owners, this stereotype is false and often quite the opposite.  I've had the opportunity to meet and become friends with many other "club owners" world-wide now.  In this day and age most Jazz club owners work their asses off and generally make no money and, in the end,  usually fade away deep in debt.  What is it then that drives someone to own and run a club?  It's the love of the music and their deep sense of duty to support the art form!  In Europe I met several club owners (Paris, Valencia, Padova and Madrid) and all share the same traits - veneration for Jazz music and a love for musicians - not money.

The best situation is when the owner is a musician themselves.  Only a musician can understand a musician.  Only someone who can really play Jazz can know what true quality is in the music.  A musician-owner knows what it's like to play a gig, to practice for hours a day, to do a tour, be in the studio and to work for love not bread.  That's not to say that a non-musician can't be a great club owner.  Certainly in the case of Art D'Lugoff (The Village Gate), Max Gordon (The Village Vanguard) or Bradley Cunningham (Bradley's) - to name just a few - non or amateur musicians ran their clubs with passion and grace and became intimately associated with the musicians - so they could create a real musical environment for their clubs.

I want to bring attention to my friend Cory Weeds.  Cory is a beautiful and passionate guy who plays his butt off and also, up until just this month, owned and ran a first-rate Jazz club in Vancouver called The Cellar.  I personally got to perform there. Hosts of the top artists in Jazz today played there.  It was also Cory who inspired me to start SmallsLIVE.  I basically copied his label, The CellarLIVE, down to the name.  So it is with great sadness that I must announce that Cory closed the Cellar this month.  There were a number of reasons - economic, personal, etc.  I know that Cory agonized over the decision but ultimately decided that it was the best thing.  I happen believe he'll open another - you can't keep a good man down.  But I wanted to say that Cory typified the best of a player/owner.  He knows this music cold and is dedicated in a way only a few are.  I also want to say publicly "THANK YOU, MY MAN!" - for a great job done well and for years of providing a venue.

Please watch this interview with Cory Weeds where he speaks about The Cellar. - CLICK HERE

A Note To Our Live Video Subscribers -  I want to apologize for the issues that have been plaguing our stream in the last couple of weeks.  We are working on the issues.  Also, we now have a new developer and are hoping to roll out our new site by the spring.  Many have complained about lags on the highest bandwidth.  We have found this to be true - quite a bit of "buffering" going on.  If you notice on the player that in the lower right-hand corner of the screen is a number.  If you click that you will get a menu.  Turn off the "auto-select" and try the lowest or medium bandwidth.  This will insure a smooth viewing experience until we get our HD stream together.  THANKS FOR YOUR PATIENCE!

This Week At Smalls:

Monday:  Monday we present an amazing bass player Hans Glawischnig and his trio with Samir Zarif & Colin Stranahan.  Hans is a bad cat and has played with Chick Corea and Miguel Zenon among others.  Come by and check him out at 7:30PM.  At 10PM is Ari Hoenig with the truly unbelievable pianist Jean Michel Pilc and bassist Sam Minaie.

Tuesday:  I'll be there with my trio fresh from the tour - Paul Gill & Yotam Silberstein.  We most likely will be joined by our friend Melissa Aldana.  It also happens to be Paul AND Melissa's birthday.  Come by and celebrate.  At 10PM is the amazing Smalls Legacy Band featuring the great Frank Lacy.

Wed & Thur: For this double header we are featuring one of the most creative musicians I know (and also a dear friend) - Brian Charette who is presenting his "Music for Organ Sextette" - this all-star band showcases Itai Kriss, Mike DiRubbo, John Ellis & Mark Ferber.  Didn't have enough sextette?  Stay for our "Round Midnight" concert which features trumpeter/arranger David Weiss and his sextet of Myron Walden, Marcus Strickland, Xavier Davis, Dwayne Burno & E..J. Strickland - powerful bands, back to back!

Fri & Sat:  On Friday for our 7:30 PM show we have the wonderful Hayes Greenfield & Roger Rosenberg quartet with Dean Johnson & Scott Neumann.  This is a seasoned group with great and soulful music.  On Saturday at 7:30 PM is guitarist Greg Skaff and his trio with the rhythm section of Ugonna Okegwo & Ralph Peterson.  Our 10:30 PM show for both nights is the winner of the Thelonious Monk Sax Competition this year - Melissa Aldana and "The Crash Trio" with Pablo Menares & Francisco Mela.  Melissa is a lovely improvisor with a foot in the tradition and a foot in the modern.  Come out and check her out.

Sunday:  This Sunday at 4PM we are showcasing guitarist Eric Divito for his CD release "The Second Time Around".  With him is Steve Wilson, Corcoran Holt & Alyssa Falk Verheyn.  At 7:30 PM is the amazing guitar duo of Chris Flory & Joe Cohn with Lee Hudson on bass.  At 10PM is the genius himself - Johnny O'Neal and at "Round Midnight", the amazing Grant Stewart and his quartet.

As always, I urge you to do good deeds and be compassionate to others and yourself.  Thank you for your support of this music and the club.  Hope to see you at Smalls.

Spike
