Smalls/Mezzrow Newsletter - February 1st, 2016

Dear Friends:

This week marks the completion of a multi-year project that involved organizing and building a complicated website and musician revenue sharing system.  This week we began to process the very first royalty payout to Smalls musicians for their participation in our revenue share.

I began the audio/video archive back in September of 2007 and since then have assiduously documented every show at Smalls Jazz Club.  We have every show played since then, lineups, bios and photos for every performance.  In about 93% of the cases we have the audio and video of the show.

The new SmallsLIVE site (www.smallslive.com), besides being a schedule site for our shows, is a marvelously complex tool that allows us to live stream shows from both Smalls and Mezzrow as well as create subscriptions to access our audio/video archives.  As subscribing members listen to shows from the archive, the usage is recorded and at the end of a pay-period total usages are calculated. Each artist gets his or her share of the subscriptions collected paid to them based on how much individual usage they received in during that period.  Our first pay period covers part of October (when we launched the site), November and December of 2015 and we will be distributing about $7000.00 to the artists for this first payout.  It may not sound like a lot but some of the more popular musicians will see between $60 - $120 as their share in this first payout.  In this day and age of Spotify paying percentages of a penny, ours is a very fair system.  It is transparent and accountable.  Furthermore, there will be payouts approximately each quarter and as our subscriber base grows, so should the payouts.

If you haven't yet, please have a look at our site.  Access to the live streams is free with a valid email.  If you'd like to become a subscriber, it's only $10/month and that money goes directly to support the musicians and the clubs.  In return you get unlimited access to our constantly growing audio/video archive.  Each week we had 10-15 new shows.  CLICK HERE FOR INFO ON SMALLSLIVE

I appreciate the support and look forward to having you at the clubs.

My best regards,

Spike
