Hello Friends:

An excellent day yesterday in Tompkins Square Park!  I'm so happy to live in a city that celebrates the name of Charlie Parker once a year with a festival in his honor.  It was gorgeous weather and folks turned out in droves.  I've been going to this festival since the very first one in the '90's and, for me, it always seemed to be the quintessential New York event - jazz in the East Village, Bird, a real "inside" event.  Yesterday had that same vibe - thousands of jazz fans in the park, vendors selling soul food, artists selling their work and everyone just vibing - happy and celebratory.  I'll tell you, the spirit of New York City still lives strong and so does Charlie Parker - Bird Lives!!

Mezzrow is gearing up for a week-long festival of its own and celebrating one full year.  I can't believe that we've reached this point.  I remember last year at this time.  I was so nervous that I couldn't sleep worrying about how people would react to the new club.  Would it be a complete disaster?  However, Mezzrow has been so well received and everyone seems to love it - musicians and fans alike.  We start this week with Peter Bernstein and Sullivan Fortner playing a duet show.  On Tuesday and Wednesday we have Ethan Iverson and his guest, the incredible Tom Harrell.  On Thursday we have the excellent duo of Jeb Patton and David Wong.  To cap off a great year I'm really psyched and honored to have one of my teachers and one of the most beloved jazz pianists today, Kenny Barron, coming in with his long-time partner on the bass Ray "Bulldog" Drummond.  These guys, to me, typify the "Bradley's" era and are a perfect end to one really successful year.  I want to also mention that on Sunday afternoon we are starting our first Mezzrow Classical Salon with the wonderful David Oei as musical director.  He'll be brining in some top-notch classical chamber music that I think will work very well at Mezzrow.  In the evening we have the veteran guitarist Vic Juris to finish off the celebratory week.

My most profuse and genuine thanks to everyone who's supported Mezzrow and Smalls this year and proved that opening a new jazz club is not an act of insanity.  Like the Charlie Parker festival - it proves that jazz music is alive and well in New York City.  We're still the hippest city in the world with the hippest fans.  My gratitude!
