SmallsLIVE Newsletter & Schedule May 20th, 2013

Hello My Friends:

We had an interesting event last week -we had our first classical music salon.  It's something that Mitch and I have thought a lot about doing and finally had the opportunity to.  The musicians were excellent (thanks to Carlos Avila, Rebekah Durham & Amy Kang).  What I was really curious about was how a jazz audience in a jazz club would react to a classical concert.  The answer is that is was really successful and in an unusual way.  Our audience connected with the musicians as if they were jazz musicians.  That is to say, the audience, not being aware of the conventions of normal classical recitals, applauded in-between movements, cheered loudly, said "yeah, man" and otherwise engaged the artists.  The "third wall" was broken down and the warm informality of the jazz club took over.  The musicians were amused and, I think, delighted.  People would ask questions and the musicians answered.  It was a wonderful way to hear a classical concert.  It was nice to have a cocktail and listen to Mendelssohn.  It made me think a lot about how special a jazz room can be - not so informal that the music is ignored and no so formal that the audience is left in the cold.  Another classical musician who was in the audience mentioned to me that this was how salons of the 18th and 19th century used to be - informal and fun.  How can we take this paradigm of presenting music, that is to say the love and warmth of the jazz audience and utilize it to present other music, particularly classical which is so misunderstood and even feared?  It was a wonderful afternoon and we will continue to present a salon each month.

This Week At Smalls:

Monday, we start our week with an unusual show.  Creative dancer Tomango will be coming in at 7:30 to perform.  He utilizes all forms of dance, particularly tap.  There is no set format but just to improvise.  Accompanying him will be Spike Wilner (me) on piano, Stacy Dillard on tenor, Rene Cruz on bass and Brandon Lewis on drums.  Following this show is the amazing Mike Moreno and his group.  Mike is a strong voice on the guitar and has been getting a lot of attention lately.  His group consists of Jon Cowerd, Matt Brewer & Justin Brown.  Afterhours is the domain of Spencer Murphy, who hosts the jam session.

On Wednesday and Thursday we are really psyched to have back at the club pianist Taylor Eigsti.  Taylor is a real star of the instrument and we're lucky to have him play at Smalls.  He's coming in with two stellar trios.  On Wednesday night he's got Harish Raghavan on bass and Nate Smith on drums.  On Thursday he's bringing in Larry Grenadier on bass and Kendrick Scott on drums.  Both shows will be packed, so get there early.  Our "Round Midnight" concert on Wednesday features another amazing young pianist named Glen Zaleski who is coming in with a quartet featuring Noah Preminger on tenor, Matt Clohsey on bass and Colin Stranahan on drums.  On Thursday night we have Nick Hempton and his quartet.  Nick is a beautiful player and underrated.  Please come and check out his group.

The weekend features two of my favorite musicians: Steve Davis & Larry Willis.  They'll be doing the 10:30 PM slot on both Friday and Saturday night and bringing in with them the fiery Mike DiRubbo on alto, Josh Bruneau on trumpet, Nat Reeves on bass and Billy Williams on drums.  Check out Steve's "Live At Smalls" CD, which is one of our best.  This is an all-star group.  Our 7:30 PM show on Friday features the wonderful Tad Shull on tenor and his quartet with Ray Gallon, Paul Gill & Joe Strasser. Tad has a huge breathy sound and is really swinging.  On Saturday at 7:30 is another great tenor player, Chris Byars who is coming in with a chordless quartet featuring Stephano Doglioni on bass clarinet, Ari Roland and Stefan Schatz.  All in all an amazing weekend.

This Sunday we have our usual great program.  At 1PM please check out Marion Cowings vocal masterclass.  At 4PM we have a presentation from bassist Ben Meigners.  At 7:30 PM is the vocalist Yaala Ballin.  At 10PM is the magical Johnny O'Neal and at 11:30 PM to close the day is the enigmatic and challenging yet brilliant Ned Goold and his trio.

As always, I appreciate your support of the club and the music. I wish all of you a wonderful and productive week.

Best Regards,

Spike Wilner

New York Jazz Record on Grant Stewart:  Live at Smalls

“[Grant Stewart] plays a brawny tenor saxophone along the lines of Sonny Rollins, Don Byas, Coleman Hawkins and Wardell Gray…the saxman swings hard and passionately…warmth, good taste and a healthy sense of swing, which could be the motto for Smalls Jazz Club as well."  - Alex Henderson
