Dear Friends:

Last Sunday was intense.  The late jam at Smalls was cancelled and we threw everyone out at 1:00 AM.  Folks were incredulous.  After the house was cleared, Mitch Borden and I (and with the help of our friends Robert Kendall and Matt Clifford) began the solemn work of dismantling Smalls.  I've never seen Mitch more serious - deadly serious and grave.  I realized at that moment the risk I was taking - possibly screwing up our beloved bar - killing the goose that laid the golden egg, as it were.  Our idea was to renovate the bar and open up the space in the front of the club for more seating.  Also to move this dishwasher (which was inelegantly placed on the stage) back to a more appropriate place in the beer room.  But this meant taking down all the art and chachkas that we had hanging everywhere.  The grease was thick - 15 years or so of uninterrupted bar activity.  Underneath the floorboards was a paradise for fruit-flys that lived there for generation and built great civilizations...

Fortunately we had some amazing contractors - the same guys that built Mezzrow (my thanks to Mr. Joe Mendler and James and their excellent staff.  Their carpenter Leo built the new bar in his workshop and on the same day their guys came in, completely demolished the old bar, cleaned up and then brought the new one in in pieces and assembled it.  Amazing.  The next few days where spent tiling, a little paint and re-decorating.

Smalls opened on Friday and the overwhelming response has been joy!  Everyone seems to like the look - it's very similar to the old Smalls.  Now we got to get it funky again but judging from the crowd on Saturday night that's not going to be too hard.

Meanwhile across the avenue at Mezzrow we are now celebrating day 26 of our existence and Mezzrow is the golden child of the jazz scene.  Everyone is happy there.  The acoustics are an undisputed marvel and everyone loves the feel of the place.  "The grown up Smalls", Neal Miner called it which made me laugh.  On an interesting note, on two separate early evenings, two mothers came in with their infants strapped to them.  Both stayed and enjoyed the music and both told me that they were attracted to feeling of the place and it made them feel safe to bring their babies in there.  It really touched me and I think says a lot about the new club.  Next week I'm looking forward to hearing my old friend Cyrille Aimee sing on Tuesday night, John Davis on Wednesday and Thursday and Anthony Wonsey with Steve Nelson duet through the weekend.   Next Sunday we have back-to-back Pasquale Grasso solo guitar and then Bucky Pizzarelli with Ed Laub.  Be sure to check the website.

I pray for peace in these strange times.  Keep an intelligent mind and please act compassionately I wish everyone the best and hope to see you at both spots.
