Smalls/Mezzrow Newsletter - February 20th, 2017
Dear Friends:

Smalls was electric this weekend.

At Smalls, the early sets are for the tourists and families - gentle and polite, easy.  The middle sets are for the college students and locals - a little more rough around the edges.  Then there's the after-hours - this is for the hardcore fans, the musicians, the madmen, the social scientists, the poets and posers and fraudulent hangers-on, the drinkers and smokers and most of all, the true lovers of the hang.  This is the real Smalls Jazz Club, the one I (barely) remember from my youth.  Manic, buzzing, vibrant, SWINGING.  It made me think of the paragraph from Duke Ellington's auto-biography, Music Is My Mistress.  He describes the first time he went into the Harlem hotspot where Willie "The Lion" Smith's band was laying it down:

"Actually everything and everybody seemed to be doing whatever they were doing in the tempo The Lion's group was laying down. The walls and furniture seemed to lean understandingly - one of the strangest and greatest sensations I ever had. The waiters served in that tempo; everybody who had to walk in, out or around the place walked with a beat."

That's how it seemed to me this weekend ca. 2:00 AM.  The bartenders and waitresses were serving in the groove.  Everyone was smiling, the band was killing.  This was more than hearing a set of music - this was an experience.  It was visceral.  It made me realize how vital the jazz experience can be and what it was once.  Jazz these days is almost like going to church - a silent and reverent experience but that's not the tradition.  The tradition was like in Ellington's time - a communal hang and intoxicating beat infecting everyone who came within the vicinity of it.  This is still very much alive at Smalls but you got to stay up late.  If you got it in you, come by and hang as late as you can.

Regards,

Spike
