Newsflash: Thousands of people, of mixed races, cultures and religions, gather and assemble peacefully to celebrate the birth of an African American cultural icon in the biggest city in America.  There are no fights, no violence, no protests and no racists.  Instead there is goodwill, joy, dancing, eating, laughing, children playing, friends meeting.  After the event the crowd dispersed peacefully, no police were needed.  Fantasy?  NO!  This actually happened yesterday in Tompkins Square Park in the East Village to celebrate the birthday of Charlie Parker.

In what has been my favorite event of the year in New York, the Charlie Parker Festival takes place simultaneously in Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem and Tompkins Square Park (near Bird's house) in the East Village.  It is a celebration of Bird but also a celebration of Jazz and subsequently a celebration of the integration of Humanity through music.  Strange how this is never reported on CNN - we only see the ugliness repeated over and over.  Why can't they report on the fact that there is this cultural blend that is based on a unified love of music?  That it actually exists and New Yorker's prove it over and over again.  Jazz is a force for peace.  People can come together like an enormous family.  The great Lou Donaldson (now 90 years old!!) performed "Whiskey Drinking Woman" to the crowd of thousands, who laughed at his jokes en masse.  The great Joe Farnsworth (etching his name on the wall of jazz history) played a captivating drum solo that silenced 5000 people.  Charlie Parker, our beloved bebop genius, New York City on a stunningly beautiful afternoon - what a combination!  Peace is possible, my friends, don't be fooled by the media.  It's not to say that there isn't a problem but we must not forget that there is also a large contingency of people who are peaceful and just want to live in harmony with their neighbors.  New York City has always typified this and Jazz is the summation.  Happy Birthday Charlie Parker!

Peace to all of you - I look forward to seeing you at our clubs.

Regards,

Spike
