SmallsLIVE/Mezzrow Newsletter
December 24th, 2018

'Twas the night before Christmas in our Jazz House,
The cats were stirring, still swinging, no time for a mouse...

Dear Friends:

Another Christmas to New Year's week - like a flash, the year came and went.  What a year, though.  Some tough loss and re-evaluation and some exalted memories.  Just when I get a bit blue about the scene and its vitality I feel the surge, the surge of the Jazz vibe.  I see a room burgeoning with musicians, faces that I haven't seen for months just "checking in" - welcome home, I always say, and they smile.  Smalls/Mezzrow is our home and the people here our family.  It's warm and comforting.  After months on the road, just check in at home and everyone knows you.  Hand slap, fist bump, big hug, laughter, old jokes and stories, a drink or two.   It's amorphous and constantly changing, musicians growing, new faces joining the fray.  It's the holidays, time to assess and look around.  Time to feel grateful for what we have - our family, bound by sound, the tradition of our music and our own personal efforts to walk this path - the path of jazz music.  It challenges, it edifies.  We go into the woods a puppy and emerge a full grown wolf, that's our life.

I am so grateful to everyone that helps make this club run each night.  My loyal and trusted staff.  My dearest friend and partner in jazz Mitch Borden.  All of these cats, believing so strongly in this music.  The HANG - the never ending hanging thing that is Smalls and so important to our community.  I am so grateful to walk down a deserted 7th avenue at 1:00 AM on a Tuesday, turn a corner and descend into the  packed to the rafters, warmth and mirth of Smalls.  I am grateful and humbled.  Thank you to everyone, many blessings in the New Year.

On New Year's Eve we have Maucha Adnet at Mezzrow.  We will only be selling 40 seats in the front for the entire evening.  Be sure to CLICK HERE to get all the information about making a reservation.  At Smalls is the great Johnny O'Neal.  That's first come/first serve so be early.  Also, be sure to check our sites for the new scheduling.  Most everything is being pushed back by 30 minutes, so doors earlier and shows earlier.

I look forward to 2019 and seeing you all at the club.

Regards,

Spike
