Dear Friends:

What a great week!  Mezzrow had its one-year anniversary in style - with Kenny Barron and Ray Drummond performing on the weekend.  The turnout was tremendous with many of the old-school Bradley's people coming to witness the event.  Kenny said that he and Ray had not played duo together since Bradley's and before Bradley had passed away.  After Bradley died the club started to have trios and slightly bigger groups but when Bradley was at the helm it was strictly duos.  What can I say about the music?  It was sublime.   It was the sound that compelled me to open the club in the first place - the sound of real "New York" jazz.  Kenny and Ray just played tunes - just standards and blues, played in the simplest fashion with amazing swing.  Kenny's touch, crisp and crystalline, weaving beautiful true bebop.  Ray laid down a carpet of quarter notes that had the most bounce I've heard in ages.  It was a musical moment that brought back to me what New York City used to be about in terms of jazz - bebop with a modern mindset married to a unpretentious and informal approach.  It was two old friends telling stories together, laughing at old jokes and just digging in hard.  The audience was there with them.  The room was packed for every set and everyone hung onto each note.  On the breaks it was a delight to get to hang with Kenny and Ray, who really enjoyed themselves.  Kenny announced; "I'm going to need to make this place my new hang".  I invited him to move in - I'd give him the damn club!

It's been quite a year and a lot of learning has taken place.  Opening a new business is a terrifying prospect, particularly a music venue.  But Mezzrow, its seems, has been charmed since the beginning.  Like it's meant to be - to really fill a much needed gap in our scene.  This weekend was the culmination of that year of work - our new piano, acclimating an effective staff, creating a bar - it all came to be this weekend.  Now we look forward to year number two and to continue the great vibes that have been started here.

I look forward to having everyone come by the clubs and to enjoy and share this music with us!
