SmallsLIVE Newsletter & Schedule

January 27th, 2014

Hello Friends:

I have to admit that sometimes that New York gets me down.  Not just New York per se, but what I perceive to be a shift throughout society towards a general lack of interest in culture.  What is this banality, idiocy, insincerity, corporate sterility that we've come to accept as our day to day society?  I feel like our vibrancy is being replaced by dullness and this worries me.  What happened to the Bohemianism and Idealism that can drive a person to embrace Art and a life of dedication, practice and discipline?  Smalls still embodies this for me.  I can walk around late at night in the desolated confines of Greenwich Village, everything long shuttered and closed down, and then enter into our basement jazz world. Here, beneath 10th street, is a place filled with people who still love to interact with people, musicians who love simply to play music.  People who still love to drink and talk to all hours.  Philosophers and fools, Artists and madmen.  Like one stalk of flower growing out of the asphalt of some paved parking lot - the Human Spirit still lives here.  It's not easy to maintain but there are still some dedicated souls for whom the jazz life has meaning.  Sometimes I stand at the foot of the stairs and observe the tumult that is taking place in my club and I say a silent prayer, thankful that this still exists and hope that these folks are protected.  Hopeful that we can forget about Facebook, warfare and moneymaking and still remember what the Blues sounds like....

This Week At Smalls:

Monday:  Our first trio of the week is pianist Shai Maestro.  Shai's been making a name for himself and touring quite a bit with his group.  He'll be coming in with Jorge Roeder on bass and Ziv Ravitz on drums.  Following him at 10:15 PM is Ari Hoenig and his quartet with Tivon Pennicott on tenor, Gilad Hekselman on guitar and Orlando Leflemming on bass.

Tuesday:  At 7:30 PM I'll be making an appearance with my trio with Paul Gill on bass and Yotam Silberstein on guitar.  Following our show we feature the fiery young trumpter Josh Evans and his Big Band - at 16 musicians, this band takes up about half the seats.  It's definitely worth it to come check out such a big group in such a small club.

Wed. & Thur:  This Wednesday and Thursday we are very lucky to have a great jazz legend in the house - Albert "Tootie" Heath, who will be playing with the pianist Ethan Iverson and bassist Ben Street.  This has been a working trio and has recorded for our label, SmallsLIVE - don't miss this opportunity to hear these guys.  Our "Round Midnight" show on Wednesday features bassist Noah Jackson and his group with Jason Marshall on the baritone, Robert Stringer on trombone, Willerm Delisfort on piano and Charles Goold on drums.

Fri.& Sat: I'm really psyched to present one of my favorite pianists this weekend for the 10:30 PM show - Danny Grissett.  He'll be coming in as a trio on Friday with bassist Ben Willams and Jonathan Barber on drums.  On Saturday he'll expand to a quartet with Jaleel Shaw playing the alto.  Our 7:30 PM show on Friday features tenor legend Joel Press and his quartet with myself on piano, Aidan O'Donnell on bass and Taro Okamoto on drums.  On Saturday for the 7:30 PM show is the great pianist Pete Malinverni and his trio with drummer Steve Williams and bassist Ugonna Okegwo.

Sunday:  This Sunday we have our usual all-day affair starting with Marion Cowings' Vocal Workshop at 1PM.  Our open mic - "Siren's Den" at 4PM.  At 7:30 PM we feature the veteran guitarist Chris Flory and his trio with Larry Ham on piano and Lee Hudson on bass.  At 10PM is the legendary Johnny O'Neal and his trio and then for "Round Midnight" is the trumpeter Bruce Harris and his swinging quintet which showcases the great Grant Stewart.

I sincerely hope to see all of you at the club this week.  Please come out and support this music.

Best Regards,

Spike Wilner
