The summer is rapidly drawing to a close - it went fast! Often, my life seems like the movie "Groundhog Day", one continuous lengthy hang at Smalls night after night. But things are really good here. When I finally do decide to pop my head up out of the hole to have a look around, I'm never that happy with what I see - idiotic television shows, horrible news in the papers, God-awful music, 7-11's popping up all over the East Village & a plethora of really stupid people walking around acting like idiots... so I quickly dive back into our basement on West 10th street, our haven. Smalls is a rare place full of intelligent and caring human beings all unified in their love for music. A self-supporting community of artists and friends. I can only be grateful and pray that it lasts.
Our campaign to build our revenue share project is nearly over (thank goodness!). We have just about one week left until it's concluded. As of this writing we have raised $37K. This is a real success and I thank everyone who has contributed. We've gotten some amazing support, reviews and very positive feedback from the artists and the fans. Please click www.smallslive.com to check out everything about the campaign and to help out if you're feeling it.
Over the last 60 days I've been working really hard on the concepts of the revenue share and how it's going to work. I've had some real breakthroughs in the last week and will be doing some experimenting with our live stream. Currently, I am looking at YouTube as our platform to host our live show and will be doing some free broadcasting right to our SmallsLIVE Youtube channel. There's some technical challenges but it seems that it could be a great thing. Do me a favor, please click "subscribe" to our YouTube channel. It doesn't cost anything and the more subscribers we have the more opportunity we have with YouTube. Here is the direct link: https://www.youtube.com/user/smallslive - I'm also going to be upgrading our cameras in the next week or so and start really working on improving our presentation and reliability of the live stream. I'll keep you updated.
This Week At Smalls
Monday - we have a nice double header to start off the week beginning with pianist Romain Collin and his trio at 7:30 PM. Romain is a creative and introspective musician with some interesting music. He's featuring Luques Curtis on bass and Obed Calvaire on drums. At 10PM we have drummer Francisco Mela coming in with his quartet that showcases tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin, the great Luis Perdomo on piano & Ben Street on bass. Please also stick around for Spencer Murphy's after-hours jam session.
Tuesday - at 7:30 to 10 PM I'll be back with my trio featuring Yotam Silberstein & Paul Gill. Then at 10pm is another installment of Lucas Pino's "No-net" Nonet which features a slew of great musicians (Colin Stranahan - Drums , Glenn Zaleski - Piano , Matthew Jodrell - Trumpet , Desmond White - Bass , Alex LoRe - Alto Sax , Rafal Sarnecki - Guitar , Nick Finzer - Trombone , Andrew Gutauskas - Baritone Sax). This band is really a joy to listen to and all members contribute material. Come out and check them. At 1AM we have Kyle Poole and his "Next Generation" jam session (The Kiddie-Poole).
Wednesday & Thursday - For our 9:30 PM shows I'm really psyched to present an old friend and a great musician, Donny McCaslin and his quartet which includes Luques Curtis, Orrin Evans & Billy Drummond. I'm sure this veteran group is going to kill it both nights. Come out and check out this rare Smalls appearance from Donny. Our "Round Midnight" concert on Wednesday showcases Assaf Kehati on guitar with his special guest Anat Cohen. Also in the group is Ehud Ettun on bass and Ronen Itzik on drums. This will be Assaf's debut at the club and should be a good one!
Friday & Saturday - we have Philadelphia in the house this weekend! The Landham Brother's Group which features Robert Landham on alto and Byron Landham on drums. Added to the Philly mix is the wonderful Orrin Evans on piano. Also joining the group is the interesting Bill McHenry on tenor and (third time this week) Luques Curtis on bass. Friday afternoon we are featuring one of our star vocalists Marianne Solivan. She's been presenting a vocal workshop all summer and at 4PM she'll be presenting the concert from that workshop. At 7:30 PM she'll also be performing with her quartet which features the great Bruce Barth on piano, Mattew Parrish on bass and Jerome Jennings on drums. Please come out and enjoy this wonderful singer. Our Saturday 7:30 PM show features tenor saxophone legend David Schnitter and his group with Spike Wilner (me) on piano, Ugonna Okegwo on bass and Anthony Pinciotti on drums. If you haven't yet, check out his Live At Smalls recording.
Sunday - at 7:30 PM we are featuring another great young vocalist Milton Suggs. Milton has a deep resonant voice and a truly amazing jazz feeling. If you're not familiar with his singing than take the opportunity to hear him - he's definitely going to leave his mark. Please be sure to check out our SmallsLIVE Interview Blog this week for an interview with Milton (see below). Our "Round Midnight" concert on Sunday features the fantastic piano playing of Jonathan Lefcoski and his trio with Russell Hall & Alvin Atkinson.
As always I thank you for your support of this music and our club. I hope to see you at Smalls in person and urge you to do good deeds and be compassionate to all living things!
