Dear Friends:

Finally, it seems, the summer has arrived.  With impeccable weather, walking the lovely winding Greenwich Village streets, I arrive at the park.  Washington Square Park is bursting at the seams with people of all varieties.  One man sits on a bench covered from head to toe with pigeons .  Another guy delights children with his marionette drummer puppet.  The Park Rangers Jazz Group, led by my friend Rio Sasaki, are back at their usual spot in the west of the park- the outdoor jazz club.  I'm waiting to sight the hawk that feasts on rodents and dominates the Washington Square no-fly zone.  This is my favorite season in New York.  Thankfully, Mitch and I were prudent enough to bite the bullet and upgrade Mezzrow's air conditioning system.  Last night it got it's full test - I knew we were ok when folks started complaining about being cold...

I'm excited for June.  For one thing, next week I go on the road with my own trio.  I'm happy to be collaborating with promoter Guilio Vannini and his company Rat Pack Music.  He is helping me program "SmallsLIVE Presents" concerts in Italy.  We will be playing the Modena Jazz Festival (link to their Facebook page) and then in Rome.  I'll also be promoting my newest CD project released on the Posi-Tone label.  It's called "Koan" and features my "Intergalactic" Trio with Tyler Mitchell and Anthony Pinciotti.  CLICK HERE for info.

Kirk Lightsey

When I get back, I'm really psyched to present a little festival of my own - the Kirk Lightsey Festival.  I'm sponsoring one of my true jazz piano idols, Kirk Lightsey, to play 5 nights - two at Smalls with a quartet and three at Mezzrow with a trio.  Kirk typified the Bradley's vibe - he is an dynamic and energetic improvisor who plays with immense warmth and humor.  It's been one of the great privileges of my career to say that we are now friends.  I also want to thank vocalist Tony Hewitt, who's helping with this project.  Kirk will be at Smalls on the 8th and 9th of June with Ed Cherry on guitar, David Williams on bass and Steve Williams on drums (CLICK).  Then he'll be at Mezzrow on the 10th, 11th and 12th with just David and Ed.  It's going to be a great week - The Official Kirk Lightsey Festival!  Be sure to make reservations for the Mezzrow show (CLICK).

I wish everyone the best and hope to see you all at the club,

Regard,

Spike
