August 17th, 2015
Dear Friends:

There's the family you are born to and the family that you choose to be with throughout your life.  Either way, a family is a group of people bound by spiritual force, with similar cultural outlook and mutual goals.  A family is sympathetic and caring, involved and concerned and sometimes, too involved.  The binding force is Love.  It is the mutual recognition of the familiar - the family traits, the traditions, the characters and the stories.  I've said it often enough - Smalls is like this, a family.  Smalls is the homestead and the family returns night after night to catch up, lick wounds, trade laughs, berate each other and talk some shit behind some backs.  It's all good because it's all Love.  Jazz is the binding force and the beauty and weight of the tradition of this music cows us and energizes us at the same time.

The Smalls Family is musicians, of course.  But not just musicians - Jazz People.  People who identify with the culture of Jazz and its exponents.  This can be writers, doctors, painters, lawyers, inventors, insane visionaries, wanderers, lost-sages.  Generally it's the soulful and the compassionate.  Often it's the hurt and the lonely.  Often it's those that have no other family than their own Jazz Brothers and Sisters and to share the "family meal" that takes place at Smalls every night.  It's a feast of pretzels, whiskey and jazz music, but most importantly that sympathetic company.  Those friends.  Those dear ones that you'd rather be with night after night than anyone else.  Your family.

I want to publicly salute my friend Erin Short.  Erin was my first choice as bartender and bar manager eight years ago when I first started managing the club.  It turned out to be the best decision I could have made.  She became the true "den mother" of Smalls (I'm sure she'll kill me for writing this).  She became a beloved and familiar face at Smalls - friend to all and part of the family.  The head of the family, maybe.  Erin has decided to take her leave to move to another place and we wish her well and many, many blessings!  But she is our family and, of course, we'll miss her.  Nonetheless, good luck and your family hopes that you prosper.
