The Smalls Musician Revenue Sharing Project will create a revenue stream for every musician that has performed at Smalls since September of 2007.
Our plan is to make our live-video stream free with a valid email address and charge a small monthly subscription charge for unlimited access to our archive, which will also include the last two years of video. Revenue from these subscriptions will be pooled and distributed to the artists based on the number of minutes they were listened to in the course of a quarter. Musicians will be paid quarterly. We hope to add content to our archive weekly and keep it current so that fans can watch shows that they recently missed. Fans will also be able to directly download a specific date if they choose. This revenue will go directly to the musician rather than the pool.
I've been working on this system for a full year now. The idea was the result of an open-forum held last year at Smalls to discuss live-streaming, intellectual property rights and the future of the music business. It was an extremely productive meeting and gave me the idea for the feasibility of creating this system. I want to credit Sean Wayland, Jon Gordon, John Mosca, Marion Cowings, David Fink and the many other musicians who came out and also subsequently met with me to discuss these important issues.
Up until about 3 months ago I had partners who were working with me to create the system. However, they walked away from the project and left me without financing. I did borrow some funds to get the site started and it's underway. However, to really complete all of our objectives which include new video cameras, recording equipment and a piano upgrade, I've decided to turn to crowd funding. I know these are tough times to be asking for financial help but if you take a look at our project and want to support it - even by just posting it to your Facebook page or forwarding it to other friends is really helpful! We just need to get the word out.
I also want to thank filmaker Jonah Jonathan who made two beautiful videos for us. The first is our "pitch video" for the campaign. The other is a lovely "history of Smalls" video with some wonderful interviews. particularly with Mitch Border - the founding father of Smalls.
If you can, please take a look at our campaign and our videos. If you feel inspired to help out we are really appreciative and, as I said, even just posting the links is really helpful.
I am also open to your questions, comments and criticisms. Please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
Tonight we open our doors with a wonderful guitarist - Dave Mooney. He's bringing in a quartet featuring alto saxophonist Jon Gordon, Matt Clohesy on bass and Mark Ferber on drums. They be playing from 7:30 to 9:45 PM and then we have our resident artist Ari Hoenig and his trio. Tonight he has the great Mike Moreno on guitar and Matt Brewer on bass.

This is an extremely exciting band and should not be missed. Afterhours is Kyle Poole and his "next generation" jam session.

Wednesday night will also be a free video stream so if you cant make it to the club then check it out at home. SmallsLIVE Interview BLOG
Interesting and insightful interviews with the artists that perform at Smalls Jazz Club.
Interviewed by bassist Spencer Murphy - these interviews shed light on the thought process of the musicians and their relationship to Smalls.
The trumpeter Alex Sipiagin, who favors a smartly updated variation on hard-bop, just released “Live at Smalls†(SmallsLIVE), an album that captures the vibrancy and vitality of his style. He returns to the scene of the recording next week with two of the same partners, the pianist David Kikoski and the bassist Boris Kozlov, otherwise enlisting Steve Wilson on saxophones and Donald Edwards on drums.
