Smalls/Mezzrow Newsletter - April 3rd, 2017
Dear Friends:

I'm at that stage where the cycles of life start to catch up with each other and overlap.  One of the most beautiful things about being a jazz musician is your relationship with your fellow musicians.  I don't know how many other fields in which you literally grow up with the same folks that you work with all your life.  From music school friends to multi-layered strata of many lives compounded.  The years go by.  We are enriched by experience - changed by it.  The art of this music keeps you focused and strong and then you look around and see who's still with you.  You see cats from 25 years ago, still "doing it" and you laugh.  Give them a big hug, hand slap, an old joke.  The family of jazz musicians marveling at their fortune in still being there - still "hanging" after all these years.  What a blessing!

I got see my old New School Jazz Program buddies play at the Vanguard this week.  Pete Bernstein and Brad Mehldau - two of my closest personal friends and two geniuses who have been playing together since nearly 30 years.  Along with drummer Leon Parker and bassist Doug Weiss, it was a real reunion for my generation of cats.  Shades of the Village Gate and Augie's and the days of yore back in the early nineties.  Smoking from a big bong and checking out Trane's "Om" - the East Village scene and many, many gigs.  The same old jokes, too.  But the resolve is still there.  The fascination for the art - the desire to explore.  There's no cynicism.  It's still just love. This music is so deep and so profound that it can sustain you for your lifetime.  It can give as much as you need.  No matter what degree of success or years gone by - it's still about that killing side with Billy Higgins and McCoy or that Bird with strings - damn, that still sounds good.

Brad and I hanging late this week after his show.  We go by The Waverly Diner - it's been there as long as we have and, like us, has gone through some renovations.  Terrible food but open all night.  We stand outside as Brad finishes a smoke and chat when a young guy with a guitar strapped to his back stops and says; "excuse me, Mr. Mehldau?".  Brad smiles and acknowledges.  "I heard you recently and want to tell you how much you've influenced me - thank you so much,"  Then the guy turns to me and says, "and you're Spike Wilner?" - I nod and smile.  "Man, I love Smalls.  I'm there all the time".  We shake his hand.  "What do you do?", I ask.  "I'm a sophomore at The New School Jazz Program".  Brad and I exchange glances and smile.  Full circle, 30 years into the future - Waverly Diner, hanging late.  Man, we're still doing this!

I look forward to seeing everyone at the clubs this week.

Regards,

Spike
